I’ve Been to 8 of Atlanta’s Indie Bookstores and Here are My Thoughts

In recent years, reading has become increasingly popular as a hobby, thanks in part to social media communities like BookTok and BookTube. This resurgence in reading has led to the opening of many new independent bookstores across the nation. These shops typically provide more than just copies of your favorite books, also opening their doors to author events, community book clubs, children’s events, and so much more. Supporting local, independent bookstores is an excellent way to prioritize reading and education in your community.

Atlanta is home to many such independent bookstores, some of which I have had the pleasure of visiting myself. Below, I have listed the eight indie bookstores I have visited in Atlanta, along with the individual experiences I had at each. Hopefully, with my descriptions of each store, you can find the right location to meet your personalized reading needs

Virginia Highlands Books

Located in the quaint Virginia Highlands neighborhood, Virginia Highlands Books offers the quintessential independent bookstore experience. Tables are scattered throughout the space, featuring top picks in specific genres and staff members’ personal recommendations. There is a decently large children’s section as well as a few shelves dedicated to young adult novels. The basement of the store features a selection of nonfiction, classics, pop culture books, fun board games, and other merchandise. Overall, Virginia Highlands Books provides a large inventory of books with a comfortable and aesthetic space to enjoy literature.

A Capella Books

Despite appearing small from the outside, A Capella Books is unexpectedly large with a great selection of books. The main space features new paperbacks and hardbacks from different genres. Many books are written by local authors, and some are even signed! The back room is dedicated to used books, most of which are still in excellent condition. A Capella Books hosts several events a month, partnering with other local businesses to serve the community. The staff is incredibly kind and helpful, and added to the wonderful experience I had at A Cappella Books. I would definitely recommend checking this one out!

Little Shop of Stories

Sitting right in the middle of Decatur Square, Little Shop of Stories probably has the best location of any store on this list. Surrounded by other local businesses, Little Shop of Stories receives a steady stream of foot traffic from both visitors and locals. This bookstore began by selling exclusively children’s books, meaning they have an incredibly large selection of books for younger readers. In recent years, they have converted the right side of the store into a space for older readers, featuring books from a variety of genres. The creative and wonderful staff continually find new ways for readers to engage with their books. For example, they had a “Blind Date with a Book” sale years ago, where the staff wrote descriptions of books wrapped in paper and could not be revealed until purchased. It was a fun twist on the typical book-buying experience, making for a memorable visit. If you plan on visiting Decatur, I would definitely suggest adding this to your list of places to check out.

All The Tropes Romance Bookstore

This fun bookstore sells exclusively romance books. The shelves are organized by different romance subgenres, including a wide range of merchandise catered to romance readers. As a romance reader myself, I absolutely loved this small but lively space! Besides including every romance book your heart could desire, the store is home to an adorable cat named Draco Meowlfoy. Draco was very friendly and added to my love for this charming and quaint store. Obviously, All The Tropes is not a store that matches everyone’s preferences, but I would recommend it to any romance readers.

Sincerely Yours Bookstore

Sincerely Yours Bookstore is located slightly outside of the Atlanta area in Smyrna, Georgia. Despite opening only recently, this independent bookstore has already garnered considerable attention from local communities. The women-owned and run bookstore is aesthetically decorated with pink walls and book-themed wall decor that makes one feel at home. They have an incredible selection of romance books, with smaller but still decent selections of other genres. The staff are clearly passionate readers themselves and were happy to discuss books with me. They have already hosted several successful events, partnering with other local women-run businesses to serve the community. Additionally, they host monthly book club meetings! I would recommend this store to anyone who wants an experience while browsing the shelves.

Atlanta Vintage Books

First opening in 1988, Atlanta Vintage Books is the oldest bookstore on this list. They provide the community with second-hand books from almost any genre imaginable, occupying an incredibly large building space. This store has many rooms that one can explore with books shoved in every nook and cranny. I made two cat friends while I was there – one was even perched on a shelf next to some books!! Atlanta Vintage Books provides a unique and unforgettable experience. I would recommend it to anyone who loves old, classic, or second-hand books.

Posman Books

Posman Books has two locations within the general Atlanta area. One is located in Ponce City Market and the other is in Avalon Mall in Alpharetta, Georgia. Posman Books is a classic independent bookstore. They offer a well-organized, personalized selection, along with other trinkets for sale. One critique I would have of Posman Books is that the staff is less personable than in other stores on this list, and their products feel slightly overpriced. However, any book lover would appreciate Posman Books, and I would still recommend checking it out.
