When I’m at the store, there’s only one food that I buy name-brand and at full price. I’ve tried to make homemade hummus, and I’ve explored other brands, but Sabra hummus is my guilty pleasure. I put it on everything: sandwiches, salads, pasta, and every kind of vegetable on the planet.
My love affair with this dip has me in the refrigerated goods aisle week after week, searching for new flavors to try. After years of hummus loyalty, I think I have a conclusive list of the best Sabra hummus flavors.
- ROASTED GARLIC
-
I love hummus, but something I love even more than hummus? Garlic. There isn’t a food item that passes through my kitchen without getting a little extra spoonful of garlic on top. That’s why this variety of hummus is their best in my opinion. There’s an appealing scoop of roasted garlic sitting right in the middle, and honestly, my only complaint is that it’s not garlicky enough for my taste.
- OLIVE
-
People’s opinions on olives tend to skew one of two ways, but this flavor is perfect for anyone who loves olives. The flavor of the tapenade really comes through with this hummus, and honestly complements the freshness of the hummus.
If you’re not a fan of olives, this is where the presentation of Sabra hummus shines; many of the hummus flavors, this one included, have a concentrated center of flavor where the olive garnish lies, so it would be easily avoidable if this isn’t your choice spread at a party.
- ORIGINAL
-
My love for all things hummus makes this a five-star product for me. Sabra Original hummus is perfect; it’s creamy, but not watery, flavorful, but not fake, and so, so versatile. Whenever I can’t find my hummus flavors of choice, Original is a safe fallback that lets you create your own dream hummus flavor.
- CHIMICHURRI
-
This variety is one that I rarely see in stores, but I snatch it up whenever I do. It has a great savoriness and herby taste that, even with my cilantro aversion, I find delicious.
While you won’t find me scraping the edges of this container with a spoon to eat, Sabra’s Chimichurri hummus is probably one of the best to use as a topping for anything. The flavor of the chimichurri really comes through with the hummus, which makes it great on top of vegetables, sandwiches, and dinner meals.
- FALAFEL STYLE
-
This is another white whale hummus for me. I can never seem to find it anywhere, which is a shame because it’s delicious and great on sandwiches. The mix of two chickpea-based foods in one container may seem counterintuitive, but the herbs and seasoning of falafel make this spread particularly flavorful.
- CARAMELIZED ONION
-
This hummus is surprisingly reminiscent of French onion soup; it has a strong onion flavor that I quite enjoy, and it’s excellent on a sandwich. I tried it once and have never been able to find it again.
Caramelized Onion has a great circle of chopped onions that actually taste caramelized. This is a great choice for all onion lovers out there if they can track it down.
- SUPREMELY SPICY
-
This hummus is definitely designed for people who can handle some heat. I typically avoid things labeled spicy since, while I enjoy the flavor of hot peppers, most store-bought spreads taste somewhat synthetic or only rely on red pepper flakes to add some kick. That’s not the case for this hummus.
Sabra’s Supremely Spicy has a plain hummus outer ring to let you monitor your spice level, and the flavorful inner circle is filled with morsels of chili peppers. My only complaint with this hummus is that the chunks of pepper often have a slimy or soggy texture once they’ve sat atop the hummus for long enough, but the freshness of the hummus is enough to offset that.
- ROASTED PINE NUT
-
I was very excited to try this variety of hummus since I absolutely love the titular ingredient. Pine nuts add a rich, oily flavor to most things they get put in, which is why I was interested in how the flavor of the pine nuts would come through.
I was a little disappointed when, even with a scoop of the middle pool of flavor, the pine nuts got lost in the flavor of the hummus itself. I’d say that this hummus has a similar taste to the roasted garlic variety, but I did use several extra scoops of the minced garlic I keep in the fridge for this exact purpose.
- SPINACH AND ARTICHOKE
-
Like the Roasted Pine Nut flavor, when I first saw this flavor in Publix, I immediately grabbed it, lost in the illusion of my favorite dip of all time. Unfortunately, once again, the flavor of this hummus fell a little short. The spinach and artichoke were mainly confined to the center of the hummus, and after mixing, got lost in the spread. This hummus is great on vegetables, but it didn’t have me eating it by the spoonful like I thought it would.
- RED PEPPER
-
This is probably one of the only hummus flavors that I won’t buy again, but it just came down to a matter of personal preference. If you love bell peppers, this is the hummus for you. The outer ring of hummus has a distinct red bell pepper flavor, and the center circle of diced pepper complements it well.
- LEMON TWIST
-
Sabra’s Lemon Twist, once again, came down to a matter of personal preference. The hummus itself had a citrusy flavor that I don’t particularly enjoy on savory foods, and I struggled to find something to eat it with. This hummus has fans, as made evident by its ratings, but Lemon Twist loyalists suggest putting it on breaded items like English muffins, which are more outside my typical palate.
Hummus is a great, healthy way to add some fiber to your snacking, and the many varieties available make it easy to find flavors you like in the store. I personally dump about half a jar of minced garlic in the container and then stir it around, but experimenting with your hummus is a great way to explore your palate.
