College is full of tough choices, such as finding new study habits and deciding on an outfit to wear based on the weather. But let’s be real, whether to rock an effortless tote bag or a practical backpack is a back-and-forth decision. I’ve used both a backpack and a tote bag for walking to class, and I’d like to share my opinions. Here are my thoughts on which one works best for me, some of my favorite bags, and how to help you choose which bag works best for you based on your lifestyle.

My bag dilemma

At the beginning of last year, I began seeing people around campus rocking tote bags. I attended a small university, and didn’t see an issue with switching from a backpack. With some saved-up money, I jumped on the trend and bought myself a Longchamp Le Pliage Original Tote Bag in Navy Blue. I can confidently say this bag is ideal for fitting a laptop and a few notebooks, with extra space for knick-knacks. With a zipper closure and a snap button top, I had no fear of losing my personal belongings or getting them damaged by the weather.

Being at a much larger campus this year, I decided to switch back to my trusty North Face Borealis Backpack from high school. Walking to further classes, this backpack equips me with durability, hands-free comfort, and weather protection on rainy days in Amherst. But is it still considered cute? I think so, it’s practical and functional, while the tote gives off an “effortlessly chic” look.

My personal favorites

Now, I promised I would share some of my favorite bags I’ve owned and seen on others. Beginning with tote bags, the Mark & Graham Fillmore Tote is one of their bestsellers, especially with an engraved monogram! You can never go wrong with their Chestnut, Ivory, or Navy bag color, and it is perfect for fitting everyday essentials. I also want to take a moment to share the Lululemon Daily Multi-Pocket Tote Bag, which is designed for a relaxed style. It is also Nylon and Polyester, rather than the traditional Faux Leather.

Besides my classic North Face bag, I want to take a moment to share other backpacks I think are perfect for practicality, yet still in style! Beginning with the Lululemon Everywhere Backpack for those who carry a lighter load to class. To bring a pop of color, my personal favorite colors on this backpack are the Raspberry Coulis and Lululemon Red! The straps are padded, which makes this backpack a comfortable choice! If you are looking for a backpack that will last you throughout college, the Vera Bradley Bancroft Backpack should be your choice. With classic colors such as “Moonless Night and Peacoat,” these cotton backpacks have the durability and style to fit everyday life in college.

finding the right bag for you…

When it comes to choosing a tote or backpack, it really comes down to your college lifestyle. If your campus is smaller and you have a lighter load, a tote bag is ideal and stylish. The Lululemon Daily Multi-Pocket Tote Bag is perfect if you are a routine gym goer and are always on the move to different workout classes. On the other hand, if you are navigating a larger campus with a larger load, my North Face Borealis Backpack has been a lifesaver. If you’re someone who hikes in the Berkshires on the weekends, attends pilates classes, and carries a lighter workload, the Lululemon Everywhere Backpack is ideal!

At the end of the day, whether you are Team Tote or Team Backpack, it really comes down to individual lifestyle and preferences. Although I’ve switched back over to Team Backpack, at the end of the day, the key is to find a bag that fits your routine and day-to-day adventures on and off campus!
