I have always loved talking.
Ever since I was little, I would get in trouble with teachers for talking too much; it’s just something that’s a part of me. It is what has led me to find one of my favorite hobbies, radio broadcasting.
It all started back in early 2022. At 15 years old, I walked into a record sale fundraiser on a foggy Saturday morning in front of my high school. I was just starting to get into collecting vinyl, and so I asked my parents to drop me off before heading to my sister’s soccer game. Â
After a few hours of walking around, I ended up at the front, ready to check out with 13 records in hand. The guy ringing me up, who I would later know to be a man named Paul Schwatrzberg, looked me up and down and first asked if I was a student
“Have you heard of our student broadcasting program?”
I told him yes, I’d heard about it while listening to the radio one day, and I was really interested, and so I left my contact info and giddily ran back to my mom’s car, who was there to pick me up.
I would later have to talk to so many different people to try to get into my school broadcasting class, and eventually I got it in my schedule and was able to start. I learned how to speak in front of people over the air, work different systems, how to host podcast episodes, how to edit vocal tracks, and even kind of developed a “radio voice.”
I had a blast, and ended up working for the same station when I turned 16, over the same, and ran advertisements and did more voice tracking, and live events. It was one of my favorite things to do for work, and it even inspired me to pursue a job in communications.
I would eventually work again the next summer, and on top of my regular work I helped run a PR campaign for the district that unfortunately never quite made it out, and produced an award-winning podcast for the Sources of Strength program.
When I eventually made it to St. Bonaventure University, I was so excited to hop into The Buzz, which is the radio station here on campus, and I have enjoyed every second of it. I run the film department of the radio station and work with the promotions department as well as the music department, and have been on a plethora of shows, including the film department’s show “Reel Talk.” My voice is one of my most valuable assets, and I’m so grateful for every single opportunity that I’ve been given to use it. I can’t wait to see what more I can do with it.
