Aroma Joes Changed My Life

Working in college isn’t always as bad as you think.

The title of this may come across misleading, and, I’ll admit, dramatic. No, drinking a rush a day didn’t change my life, nor did their delicious hash browns. I happen to work at Aroma Joes, one on my college campus actually. Aromas did change my life. For one very specific reason. The community. The Aromas I work at is all college students. I’ve had a job my whole time in high school, and even though it sometimes changed, I always needed to be busy. So, when I came to UNH as a little baby freshman, I knew I needed to get a job. I came into Aromas as a customer on my first day here and saw that they were hiring. I then applied.

Now, obviously it’s a coffee shop, so my expectations weren’t high. I was just hoping for a couple of shifts a week to keep to myself and make some money to support my college purchases. What I didn’t realize is that over the next two years working here is that I would meet some of my best friends, and future bridesmaids.

Of course at the beginning I was shy, but as I started to meet people, I started to look forward to coming to work. I had a few girls at Aromas that I called my best “work” friends. For a while, breaking that gap between real friends and work friends was hard and awkward. But once we found each other in a frat bathroom and got breakfast the next morning, there was no more awkwardness. I now am going on my third year at Aroma Joes, with my best friend (not best work friend anymore, just best friend) Emily by my side, and I could not be more grateful for the opportunity. This, I imagine, would go for any laid-back college job. I recommend getting that job you’ve had your eyes on in college, you might even meet your forever favorite people.

Hi! I'm Emma, I major in Human Development and Family Studies with a concentration in family support, graduating in 2027, on track to be a marriage and family therapist. I love all things glitz and glam. I currently work at aroma joes as a barista! I enjoy working out and being active, and I also love to share my opinion on makeup and all things girly, while occasionally bringing in knowledge on mental health I learned from my classes. My hobbies include hanging out with my friends, meeting new people and re-watching Gilmore girls.
