Get ready, Legally Blonde lovers (aka me)! Our beloved Elle Woods is returning to the screen, but this time in a new series. Back in May 2024, Prime Video announced during its upfronts presentation that the Legally Blonde prequel series, Elle, was greenlit and in the works. And now (finally!!!), two years later, the streamer has released the first Elle trailer.
In February 2025, Reese Witherspoon (the original Elle, of course), announced that Lexi Minetree would star in the new series. Witherspoon shared the news with Minetree and posted her reaction in an Instagram video. Witherspoon told her, “We had to make a really hard decision the other day, and we wanted to tell you in person because you’ve just worked really hard. We just wanted to tell you that you don’t have to audition anymore because you got the part. You’re Elle Woods.” Minetree said, “Really? Oh my god! Wait, I want to call my mom.” Minetree will be joined by a stacked cast of characters, including Chandler Kinney (Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin), who will play Elle’s nemesis Kimberly, and Jacob Moskovitz (Y2K), who will play star athlete Miles.
While Prime Video shared a first-look of Minetree as Elle during the company’s 2025 upfronts, this new trailer is truly the first time fans have been able to fully see the actress recreate the iconic character. In the trailer, “Perfect Day” by Hoku plays (IYKYK) as Elle gets ready for her Bel-Air birthday party in 1995. Soon after, Elle’s parents inform her that her dad got a new job, and they’ll be moving to Seattle — “a new city with a fresh start,” her mom says. It’s obvious Elle doesn’t fit in with the Seattle crowd, which is reminiscent of how we felt as viewers watching the same character walk onto the Harvard campus for the first time. The trailer also shows Bruiser as the cutest little puppy, so I may be tuning in for him alone.
We all know Elle Woods for her charismatic charm and go-getter attitude, but what’s her full origin story? How did she become so confident? According to Variety, the series will follow ”Elle Woods in high school as we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first Legally Blonde film.” Now, we know that life experience includes a major move to Seattle.
Elle hits Prime Video on July 1. As we wait for the release this summer, I’ll be rewatching Legally Blonde and brushing up on my legal jargon. Objection!
