The University of Tampa’s D2 dance team, the Spartan Scarlets, has been a highly recognized organization, and every year over 50 girls try out, hoping to fill the 20-25 spots on the team. This year, I had the privilege of interviewing my friend and newest Spartan Scarlet, Michelle Reading. Michelle is a freshman at the University of Tampa, and I sat down with her and interviewed her about being a freshman on the dance team. Here’s what she had to say about being a Spartan Scarlet!
What was the audition process like?
“We were taught small pieces of choreography to perform in groups of three and evaluated our technique in areas including jumps, turns, legs, etc. In addition, we were then taught two combinations, one a more hip-hip upbeat style combo and one a more jazz lyrical style combo, to perform in front of the judges.”
What made you decide you wanted to audition for the team?
“I wanted to continue dancing in college since I have been a competitive dancer for 10 years, and I thought that it would be an amazing experience to be a part of the Spartan Scarlet Dance Team.”
Were you nervous about auditioning? Why or why not?
“I was nervous to be auditioning since I knew that it was very competitive, and I had very talented dancers auditioning beside me.”
How did you feel when you saw your name on the list to be part of the team?
“I was thrilled that I was chosen to be a part of the dance team. I felt accomplished that all my work to prepare for auditions paid off and that I was a strong enough dancer to be a part of the team.”
How often do you practice?
“We have two practices each week lasting 2 1/2 hours each.”
What performances are you doing this season?
“We have, so far, performed at Midnight Madness and at the American Cancer Society’s Breast Cancer Walk at Raymond James Stadium. We will also be performing at UTampa’s basketball games as well as competing at The College Classic in Orlando.”
How is it balancing your schoolwork while being on the team?
“I have been balancing my school work very well while being on the team. I grew up very busy, and I danced most nights of the week in high school as well as having been a part of many other activities. I am very much used to having a busy schedule, as do most dancers, so I have been able to balance both my schoolwork and my dance team commitments just fine.”
If you were to give advice to an incoming freshman who wanted to try out, what advice would you give them?
“I would recommend that you work on the skills that are required to be a part of the team so they are strong and you feel confident. There were many skills that I did not practice at my studio prior to auditioning. So, I had to work extra hard to make sure those areas became stronger. I would also recommend following our social media to see what activities our team is doing throughout the year and trying to attend any clinics to see if it is something you would be interested in doing.”
Are you happy about being a Spartan Scarlet?
“I am very happy about being a Spartan Scarlet. I have loved being a part of the team and making connections and friendships with all the scarlets. I love how everyone is very committed to the team and understanding of one another. I also love having the structure and responsibility of being a Scarlet because it keeps me committed to an activity and allows me to enjoy my passion for dance.”
Will you try out again next year?
“I will definitely want to continue on the dance team, and I am planning on trying out again next year!”
