The girlies get it; hearing someone only washes their hair once a week can be shocking. It was once shocking to me too. But switching my hair care routine to one wash a week has been life changing, and I need to share my secrets. Do keep in mind while reading this, I have type 1 straight hair, so managing it is definitely easier.

Figure out staple hairstyles. Having hairstyles to fall back on as you are nearing your next wash is essential. You are definitely not going to want your hair down, come day five of not having washed your hair. Practice some braids, buns, ponytails, and buy a slick stick for sure. Tiny rubber bands and claw clips are amazing. These hairstyles are what are going to get you through those last few days of having totally gross hair.

Take care of your scalp. It all starts with the scalp and the worst feeling is an itchy one just a few days after washing your hair. Keeping it hydrated while only shampooing once a week is the secret. I would suggest a scalp oil to use in your hair the day before every wash. This will ensure an extremely hydrated scalp at the end of each wash period. Also, some sort of scalp massager. This is great for massaging the oil into your scalp, as well as loosening any dry skin that needs to go in the shower (ew, I know).

Double shampoo, always. This has truly changed my life. Only washing your hair once a week means your scalp is really only getting a deep clean once a week. So, really take advantage of that wash. By double shampooing you are ensuring your hair is getting as clean as possible, and you are not missing a single spot on your scalp. This is also a great time to whip out the scalp massager again to really get your scalp clean while shampooing.

Invest in dry shampoo. It is a life saver, I swear. I especially love putting dry shampoo on at night and sleeping with it, or as soon as I get up in the morning, so it can sit while I get ready. I do have lighter hair, which definitely makes it easier to blend my dry shampoo, but I have heard of great recommendations for those of you with darker hair. Do not be afraid of dry shampoo, I promise it works wonders, given enough time to sit and blend.

I understand washing your hair once a week can seem unimaginable, but I promise with the right training and products, you will never look back. It is such a relief to only have to worry about washing my hair once a week and has made showering amidst a busy week so much less stressful. Also, might I add, my hair has never been healthier.
