Punk, indie-rock, or alternative rock, is a specific style of music that was popularized by the Scene or Emo kids. These people were always seen in black, pink, and with heavy dark makeup. Popular bands in the 2000s included Panic! At the Disco, My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, and many more. For a while, this style of music was not as popular as it once was in the 2000s and 2010s, but it has since made a comeback. Personally, I have always loved this style of music, and the new music that’s been released has made my cold, black, emo heart so happy. So, with a general understanding of why I am ecstatic for this year, here are some of the most anticipated songs and albums of the year for this style of music.
“Intellectual Property” – Album by Waterparks
This album will be the 5th studio album being released by this band, with their last release being “Greatest Hits” in 2021. Since the announcement of the album, 3 songs (“F*UCK ABOUT IT”, “SELF-SABOTAGE, and “FUNERAL GREY”, which all slap by the way) have been released and have gained a lot of popularity amongst fans. Since then, the band has announced a North American tour, which is happening in mid-2023.
“Love From The Other Side” – Single by Fall Out Boy
Fall Out Boy has been very quiet these past few years. They haven’t dropped an album since “MANIA” in 2018, or any new music since the second volume of “Believers Never Die” in 2019. Not too long ago, they started a soft-launch of a song being released on January 18th. They also posted on Instagram saying there was “more to be coming soon”. This band was a childhood favorite, and seeing it finally come back is one of the most exciting things that will come out of this year.
“The Jaws of Life” – Album by Pierce the Veil
Alongside Fall Out Boy, PTV has not released anything since “Misadventures” in 2016, which sucked as their music is some of the best of this type, until recently. Since then, they started releasing singles for this upcoming album being released on February 10th, these include “Pass The Nirvana”, “Emergency Contact”, and my absolute favorite “Even When I’m Not With You”. I am not kidding when I tell you this song made me ascend, and if it’s not one of my top 5 songs on my 2023 Spotify Wrapped, I will be incredibly shocked.
“This Is Why” – Album by Paramore
Although there is no release date (that I know of) for this album, the band has released 3 singles to kickstart the album. These include “The News’”, “This is Why”, and “C’est Comme Ça”, which all go so hard. Yet another band that hasn’t released music since “After Laughter” in 2017. See the trend? I was never a huge Paramore fan when I started getting into this style of music, but I must say, I’m pretty stoked to see them releasing more music in 2023.
“The Summoning” – Single by Sleep Token
This song goes so goddamn hard. After going viral on Tik Tok for being the “emo baby making song of the year”, Sleep Token’s monthly listeners have skyrocketed. They have also released a few other singles like “Aqua Regia”, “Granite”, and “Chokehold”. While this band is a bit heavier than some of the others previously talked about, but they still make amazing music. They are most likely releasing an album at some point this year, but what it’s called or when it drops, I have yet to find out.
There is so SO much more music that will be released this year, in many different genres, and I definitely could not fit it all in a single article, but I did what I could.
