I have been with my partner for three and a half years now, and on Jan. 5, 2023, he asked me to marry him. It was the happiest day of my life so far. He took me to our first date spot at an overlook in a park back home, and it truly felt like a movie moment.

However, your emotions are running so high that you might forget what he said, like I did. I remember him getting down on one knee and saying the sweetest speech ever, but I forget what he said because I was smiling, crying and laughing at the same time. It happens, I guess?

There were just so many emotions running through me that I didn’t know what to say, but of course, I said “yes.”

Both of our families were happy for us and we celebrated with champagne and a lot of picture taking. It was a dream come true.

People can become pushy when it comes to moments like this. Many families and friends asked me over and over, “When is the wedding?” Listen, I’m just trying to soak in all of the feelings right now. We are in no rush, and we don’t have a plan quite yet.

It was a little weird coming back to school for the spring semester and telling all of my friends that I was engaged. I felt like I had aged 20 years when I said it.

Typically, people don’t think of college students getting engaged and married. It’s a weird feeling though because everyone is at a different stage in their life here. I feel so much older now that this happened.

So, what now? Well, there is no set rule book in place for what you’re supposed to do, so I have been putting together idea boards on Pinterest, looking at what type of dress I want, looking at some church venues, reception ideas and colors.

Like I said, there are no rules to this. Get creative and have fun. Throw an engagement party, celebrate with a nice dinner or have a glass of wine with your partner on the couch.

I’m planning on buying a wedding planner from Amazon so I can look at all of the basic stuff that needs to be done such as setting a budget and designing an expense sheet for everything.

Also, a big part of this whole process is not knowing what to do and being confused about what happens next. That’s OK. I’m slowly learning this every day.

If you’re in my shoes right now, remember, everything is on your standards and your own timeline. This time is special, so take it all in and just enjoy being engaged. Don’t let people tell you when you should or shouldn’t set a date.

Your relationship is your business, plain and simple. It’s your wedding, and the key word is “your.” Stand up for yourself, enjoy this time and definitely brag a little about your ring.

For those who are wondering, yes, I love my ring. I’m obsessed with it. Don’t ever be nervous about not getting what you want because he or she knows you better than you think.
