The “Love is Blind” Season 3 Reunion: Gaslighting Or Miscommunication?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Content warning: This article discusses topics of disordered eating and toxic relationships.

During this season of Love is Blind (LIB), we saw all kinds of couples get together.

For those who are unaware, the premise of the show is that two groups of singles, one male and one female, spend a few days speed dating one another in so-called “pods.” In these pods, everyone gets a chance to get to know every participant in the LIB experiment and, hopefully, find a deep connection with someone.

After the pods, many couples decide to get engaged, and once they meet face-to-face for the first time, they embark on a journey together to test if love truly is blind. They are sent on a honeymoon before moving in together, meeting each other’s families, and meeting the other contestants. By the end of the show, the couples must decide whether they will meet at the altar and say “I do” or “I don’t.”

The reunion episode followed after all the episodes had aired on Netflix, and fans were itching to see which of their favorite couples were still together. Alexa and Brennan, as well as Matt and Colleen, said “I do” at their weddings; fans were eager to see if the marriages had continued since the show had ended. In exciting news, both couples revealed that they are still happily married and owe it all to their experience on Love is Blind

However, while Colleen expressed being in love with Matt and happy in their relationship, many viewers wondered if that was actually the case. Fans took to TikTok to analyze her body language and facial expressions while she spoke, and many believed she looked “afraid” or “uncomfortable” around her husband.

Colleen quickly shut these rumors down. She posted on her Instagram that she was not feeling this way and was simply uncomfortable and disappointed (in herself) with how she was portrayed on the show.

Zenab and Cole had a rocky relationship throughout the show, as Cole made many comments that upset Zenab. Zenab even said he had body-shamed her, and she had “stopped eating” because of his comments. “I was eating, like, a banana and a teaspoon of peanut butter just so I wouldn’t pass out on the long days we were filming,” said Zenab.

Cole expressed a lot of emotion when the two spoke at the reunion, as he had been receiving a lot of online hate from Zenab fans. Cole denied making these comments and said that Zenab was lying. Zenab brought up one of the most controversial moments of the night amid this conversation: the “Cuties Incident.”

She said they had been filming for a long time, and she had grabbed two Cutie oranges to eat because she hadn’t eaten yet that day. When she did so, she said Cole asked if she was really going to eat both of them and told her she should save her appetite. Cole was dumbfounded by Zenab’s retelling of the story, as he believed the comments were being taken way out of context. He pleaded with the producers to air the clip if they had it.

So they did… and it did not turn out in Zenab’s favor. Netflix inserted a short clip at the tail-end of the episode of the exact scene Zenab described. Only, Cole’s tone and words were in fact taken out of context, and fans were shocked to see how much Zenab had exaggerated the story.

I could go on for hours about all the reunion episode drama that went down, but I don’t think I have enough popcorn left! Reality TV is easy to get wrapped up in, but these are real people who have feelings just like you and I. So, remember to be careful with the comments you post online, especially before you see everyone’s perspective.

I can’t wait to see what Season 4 will bring!
