How to stay warm in your dorm room

It’s November in upstate New York, and I’m still walking outside in shorts and a tank top. The effects of global warming are quite literally unfolding in front of our eyes. I don’t know about you, but it’s mildly concerning to me. Nevertheless, it will inevitably become colder in Hamilton, even if that winter chill comes a few months late. It will become so cold that you’ll forget our planet is, in fact, warming. You’ll wish you were back in November listening to Midnights while sipping your iced coffee on another 65-degree hot girl walk.

Soon, we won’t be able to expose our bare hands to the outside for more than 30 seconds at a time without going numb and wishing we went to school somewhere on the West Coast. Temperatures in our dorm rooms are bound to fall because, let’s face it, the heating system never quite seems to do its job. Although you can’t always control slipping and crashing to the ground on black ice, you can control how warm you stay in your dorm room! Here are some practical ways to escape the cold and cozy up in your room ahead of final exams.

Use a Heating Pad

If you don’t have a significant other to cuddle with for body heat, then using a heating pad for some extra warmth is a must. Make sure to find one that doesn’t get too hot, and try to use it for a maximum of 30 minutes at a time. Remember to not place it directly on your skin without a layer of cloth. You can purchase a heating pad for under $20 at Kinney Drugs. An alternative are heated blankets which can provide a more long term solution for your bed.

Wear Long Socks and/or Layers to Bed

Whenever I wear socks to bed, I always seem to feel warmer. There’s actually a scientific reason for this: your feet are a crucial temperature sensor for your body, so making sure you don’t let that heat escape is important for staying toasty. You can also throw on a long sleeve or a couple layers of clothes to sleep –  layers aren’t just for the outdoors!

Invest in Thick Blankets

Sometimes, it’s worthwhile to purchase a couple extra thick blankets to drape over yourself while you sleep. It can be a hassle to store large blankets when you don’t need them when it’s hotter outside, but in the midst of winter… you’ll be thankful you made the investment! Amazon is a great place to find them!

Buy a Humidifier

A humidifier can act as a heating system, making the temperature in your dorm room a little warmer. And, another plus: It will also keep the air in your dorm room more moist so that you don’t have to deal with dry skin.

I hope these tips can help you be a hot girl even in the midst of winter!
