It comes to no surprise that making and appreciating art can improve a person’s quality of life. Art becomes a medium where one can express deep emotion and release great tension. 

Specifically, music and dance benefit both our physical and mental health. When we listen to music our bodies release dopamine, the pleasure hormone responsible for elevating our mood. Likewise, when we dance our body releases endorphins, the hormones that alleviates stress.

Perhaps these are the reasons why music and dance have become integral parts of human society. When we listen to music our bodies want to move along with it and, even if you’re not the type to dance, your ears certainly appreciate a good tune. 

Below, are recommended local events and courses where you can make or appreciate art in a safe and inclusive space:

Ballet Capital Oeste

Classical ballet and contemporary dance are reinvented in September with the arrival of autumn, a season where everything is reborn, transformed, flourishes and bears fruit; we rediscover ourselves through movement, because dance connects us with the best of us.

Ballet Capital Oeste, with the support of the Department of Cultural Social Activities of the UPRM, will present its new autumn season, entitled Ensamblados, on November 4th, 2022. This event will be held at the Figueroa Chapel Amphitheater free of charge.

Ciento10’s Night of Music and Poetry

At the restaurant Ciento10 in Aguadilla, there will be a night of music and poetry for witches and wizards on Friday, October 28th at 7:00 p.m. The featured musician for this event is bohemian rock artist, Juan Carlos Diaz. The music will call onto the magic with all its enchantment!

Vuelta Bajo Teatro

Vuelta Bajo Teatro presents “theater for the everyday,” where they present tools that bring awareness to our breathing and how it can help us be more effective in everyday life. They will host weekly sessions decicated to working with movement, composition, and rhythm techniques that can benefit your physical and mental health.

The sessions will be held Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. throughout the month of October at Taller Libertá, Mayagüez. To participate, you only need to arrive at the location: Taller Libertá, Pablo Casals Street #66 (in front of the market square). No experience is necessary.

Bomba Clandestina

Bomba Clandestina is a musical group that play Puerto Rican bomba. On the last Friday of each month, they host an event called Viernes de Cultura where they perform their bomba. This month, the session will be held on October 28th in Algabaría, Mayagüez at 8:30 p.m. It is an open invitation for anyone interested in attending this inmersive cultural experience. This event in particular will be halloween themed and wearing a costume is encouraged!

The Cooperative also has weekly events called “Entre Café, Musica, y Arte” at la Plaza de Colon in Mayagüez from 6pm to 10pm.

TACU RUM’s Spooky Paint Night

A fellow student asociation here in UPRM will be hosting a halloween-themed paint night this Friday, October 28th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. This is a fun and engaging event for you to celebrate Halloween! The event will take place at the Chardón Building and the cost of entry is $5.00.

In their instagram, @tacu_rum, you can find the oficial promotion of the event and further details. TACU stands for Taller Artístico Creativo Universitario and they regularly plan artistic activities on campus!

Rocky Horror Picture Show at UPRM

Cinémathèque is presenting a unique performance of the Rocker Horror Picture Show here in Mayagüez. This is a great theater function to experience this spooky season. The show will take place in the Figueroa Chapel amphitheater on October 31st and November 1st, 2022. The doors will be opening at 6:00 p.m. and the cost of entry is $3.00. Those attending are welcomed to come in costume and get in the halloween spirit!

Isabel Padilla is an undergraduate student in the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez currently studying English Literature. She is currently working as the website manager for the UPRM English Department and the Oral History Lab. Aside from that, she’s a member of Sábanas Bilingual Literary Magazine working as an editor, social media manager, and event planner.
