Hobbies I Tell Myself I’ll Pick Up

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

Maybe it’s the fact I’m already over a quarter into my last year of college, or maybe it’s that I’ve been using the same fun fact for icebreaker games the past four years, but I’ve recently been wanting to add to my list of hobbies and try out all the activities life has to offer.

My friend even called me out, saying, “You literally have a new hobby you want to do every week.” And because that really is how it’s been lately, I’ll keep track of all I want to do by sharing a list with you all.

Here are the hobbies I tell myself I’ll pick up (and hopefully will):

  1. Volleyball

This is a sport I repeatedly told myself I’d get into, and I actually did! I started off disliking volleyball because of the negative association I had with it in high school (when people would specifically target me in gym class because they knew I couldn’t receive the ball), but it quickly turned into a good one. After graduation, my hometown friends and I would play volleyball over summer for fun, and we’ve been doing it ever since. My passion for the game had a random spike, leading me to the present day where I’m on a recreational intramural team!

  1. Dance

Second to volleyball (or maybe even first) is dance. Growing up, I’ve always watched videos of people doing hip-hop, wishing I could do the same. A part of me thinks it’s too late to start, but I’ll try not to let that stop me from trying a dance class at school with a few friends or maybe even lessons at our nearby dance studio.

  1. Kickboxing

I’m patting myself on the back for having already tried this last year, but now I want to get back into it. My friend and I went to two of the kickboxing classes offered by Montclair State University’s Recreation Center, but as soon as she wasn’t able to go anymore, I was too scared to continue going on my own. But nothing is more satisfying than throwing on some used, sweaty boxing gloves and high-kicking a punching bag the same size as me.

  1. Piano

A hobby I’ve already tried but can’t pat myself on the back for because I quit it too soon. I played piano for two years but stopped because of how intensive and long the lessons felt, courtesy of my teacher (even though she was so patient). I’ve always found myself regretting that I forgot two years worth of a skill, so hopefully I can dedicate time to relearning.

  1. Creative Writing

As a senior journalism major, I’ve spent the past four years writing in line with AP style, interviews, the inverted pyramid structure, etc. While I genuinely believe that’s the type of writing I’m best at, a big part of me wishes I was good at poetry, short stories or any type of creative writing. It’ll take practice, but I’m lucky I have a boyfriend who is amazing at it.

My interest in different hobbies is always changing and going, but these five have stuck with me the longest. By the end of the year, maybe I can write a creative story about my experiences as a kick-boxing, volleyball and piano-playing dancer.
