“The Sex Lives of College Girls,” a severely underrated HBO series created by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble, has been renewed for a second season which will premiere on Nov. 17.
This TV show, though only having 10 episodes, captures the confusion that comes with a lack of life experience that all college freshmen go through. As a college freshman myself, I can attest to how realistic the experience shown in the show is.
The show moves quickly, which is great for those of those with short attention spans, but doesn’t gloss over anything or rush the character development.
Kaling told US Magazine “Life can be really hard on campuses for young women and we wanted to show all of that, and not just the fun, sexy part, but the parts that were a little uglier, to be honest.” It’s refreshing to see a show that shows all parts of what college is like instead of just the glamorous highs or dramatic lows.
Each of the four main characters is based on an archetype: Leighton (Reneé Rapp) is the popular one, Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) is the athlete, Bela (Amrit Kaur) is the comedian and Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) is the quirky one. In reality, each character is well-developed and so much more than their stereotypes. This show portrays inclusivity in a fresh and organic way; you can see that even after only one episode of watching these characters.
So, what do we know about the second season so far?
Well, the season two trailer just dropped on YouTube and the show looks like it’s picking up right after Thanksgiving break at Essex College.
In this season, Leighton has started owning her sexuality and will continue her coming-out journey.
Whitney will continue to explore who she is in this college environment and see where her relationship with Canaan goes as her soccer season ends.
Meanwhile, Kimberly has to figure out a way to pay for college after her scholarship was revoked after she got caught cheating on a test. She’ll also have to start navigating college without Nico (Gavin Leatherwood) as he won’t be a returning character this season. This is probably for the best for Kimberly; he was the one who gave her the reason and materials to cheat after all.
Bela continues work with her new all-female comedy troupe after quitting Essex College’s most prestigious comedy group after she was sexually harassed. It also seems like there may be sparks flying between Bela and Eric.
Hopefully, the friendship between these four girls will solidify and they will get even more familiar with each other. They’ve started depending on each other, even though they didn’t originally want to, as they were randomly assigned as roommates.
This is a favorite show of mine: the perfect length and amount of episodes to keep you entertained, jokes that aren’t dry or humorless and storylines that are relatable and great to see in media. It’s an honest and comical portrayal of the college experience and I for one can’t wait to see what happens to these characters in season two.
