HCC Execs: Spooky SZN!

Spooky season is upon us! So, the Her Campus at Carleton execs came together to recount what we find spookiest and tell some spooky (and not-so-spooky) stories about our fall time for you.

Couples Costumes – Maya Blumenfeld

In honour of the Halloween season, I find that the spookiest thing ever is a cringey couple’s costume. One pairing that will forever haunt me is a vagina and bloody tampon costume—there’s no other reaction to that than “WTF”! Sure, I love a creative, adorable couple’s costume inspired by a fictional relationship or hilarious pun, but there are just some costumes you don’t do. It just gives me more to question about the couple itself and although I’m rarely a harsh judge, I definitely will be one, in the face of a strange costume combo.

Vending Machines – Aria Mann

In the first few weeks of being on campus this year, I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. No ghosts, no poltergeists, or anything else of that nature (supernatural or undesirable). But on one sweaty day, after walking through miles of tunnel to reach the Loeb building, I figured that I would try to buy a drink from a vending machine, using my Campus Card (which I had charged). Thus began an endless journey. Despite having posters everywhere promising that they accepted them, the machines denied my card as if I had tried to shove in my driver’s license. I went to four different buildings. I tried not one, not two, but at least six vending machines. After trying to jab my card into the sixth machine for two minutes, to no avail, I had to walk away in shame. It is with great sadness that I must come to the conclusion that all of the vending machines in this school have been possessed by a demon that has a grudge against the Campus Card.

Spooky TV Shows – Rianna Lim

To get spooky this fall season, I’m excited to have some fears and frights while watching Netflix’s oncoming horror, thriller and true-crime movies and shows. I’m especially looking forward to tuning into The Luckiest Girl Alive, a thriller starring Mila Kunis, and of course the new TV series Wednesday based on the classic and creepy Addam’s Family character. Also, a new horror film called the Midnight Club (directed by Mike Flanagan, who also directed The Haunting of Hill House) will be coming out as well. I’m usually not one who enjoys getting spooked by my TV screen, but I might just give it a chance this season!

School work – Leila MOHABEER-ORTIZ

When I think of spooky, my mind immediately goes to the pile of work I always push to reading week. Spooky week should be a time of relaxing or partying or just generally enjoying life before Ottawa freezes over; but alas I sit in my room working on assignments I probably should have completed weeks ago. Despite my attempts to romanticize the academia aesthetic during the fall, I still shudder when I think of the work I have waiting for me.

Gas Prices – EmMa Hodgson

We’ve finally made it to October, which means spooky season is here! It only seems right to talk about a spooky experience. I think one of the scariest encounters I’ve had happened this summer — the highest gas prices I’ve ever seen. Every time I had to fill my tank, I genuinely felt the need to practice a horror movie scream. For the longest time, the prices never lowered and seemed higher each time I went. The worst part was the fact I was driving between Ottawa and Kingston almost every week. My parents were happy to see me visit so often but my bank account was terrified.

Spooky Movies – Ashley HERMALIN

While I’m not a huge horror fan, for me when it comes to spooky season I love the other movies available. It’s not October unless I rewatch Halloweentown, Funsize, or my favourite thriller The Craft. Spooky season requires copious amounts of chocolate and candy, hot chocolate overloaded with mini marshmallows, and the yummiest-smelling candles.

Fall Activities and Gilmore Girls – Emma Holloway

Spooky szn is one of the best times of the year. Whether you’re doing a fall activity like going to the pumpkin patch or going apple picking, there’s always a cozy vibe surrounding these activities. Is it bad that Gilmore Girls gives me more of spooky szn vibe than Halloweentown? Not sure, but I’m definitely not mad about it. And not to mention picking out a cute Halloween costume. . .so fun!

TBR List – Rachel Fiset

This spooky season has been flying by far too quickly, just like my free time! Since the school year has started, I’ve had, sadly, absolute no time to get any of my leisurely reading done. Even when I do have time, my eyes are so tired from reading so many academic journal articles that the last thing I feel like doing is reading more. As such, my TBR, or ‘to-be-read’ list has grown widely high. It truly is a spooky sight!
