At the best of times, Uni life is expensive, with books, tech, rent, food, and social events it can seem difficult to keep up with the costs. With the cost of living on the rise, it can seem more difficult than ever to stay afloat. I’ve compiled five possible ways you can earn some extra money alongside your degree as an alternative to your average part-time job.

1. Become a Tutor

Earning up to £20 an hour, tutoring can be a fun, flexible and rewarding way of earning some money. Why not put you’re A Levels to use and share your knowledge with younger students? MyTutor is a great platform that offers as many or as few hours as you like as well as generous pay, and it’ll be a great addition to your CV. If you’re considering becoming a teacher, even better!

2. agency Work

Signing up for a hospitality agency can be a really great way to work flexibly while at uni. With no set minimum hours, you are free to work as and when you can. The pay is usually high and hours reliable. The only drawback with this one is that hours can be sporadic and there is no guarantee that you will get shifts every week so if you are relying on money for rent this may not be the best option for you.

3. Delivery riding / driving

If you own a car, bike, or motorcycle, you could earn a decent income from delivering food from restaurants to customers. Using a service like Deliveroo, you can be paid up to £16 an hour and again you can choose your hours.

4. Pet Sitting / Dog Walking

Missing your family pet? Why not try your hand at dog sitting or walking? Lots of pet owners look for people to walk their dogs while they work all day, and with a university schedule, there is always time to go on a walk and earn some money while you’re at it. The best way to find these jobs is through pet-sitting websites like BorrowMyDoggy and Facebook pages.

5. University Roles

There are plenty of roles offered through the University to become a student ambassador, work in the Career Zone, guild reception or Marketplace shops. There aren’t a huge amount of these roles but they do come up on Handshake every once in a while and the convenience of working on campus is hard to beat!

While it is important to keep on top of your finances while at university, make sure not to work too many hours and take time for yourself as everything can move quite quickly during term time. Don’t put yourself under too much pressure and take too many hours at a part-time job. If you find yourself having to take on so many hours that your studies are suffering, you may be entitled to bursaries from the University!
