4 places to explore the theatre scene in Baltimore this Fall  

  1. Center Stage  

Center Stage is the State Theatre of Maryland, holding close to 300 seats. They have an exciting season this year, with their next production opening at the end of October. Ain’t No Mo’ is a play that surrounds African American Airlines flight 1619 which is traveling to Africa, which tells the story inspired by the arrival of African Slaves to the Americas in 1619. It is retold through Peaches, the flight attendant, who is able to represent the queer community and speak her mind. This play is important now in regards to Black representation as well as the subject matter. This play uses satire as well as allegory to describe the value of Black Lives to a country where they were crucial to its success. This play is running till the end of November and has student ticket prices.  

  1. Baltimore Theatre Project and the Iron Crow Theatre  

The Baltimore project is located in a renovated street home roughly ten minutes from campus. The theatre project has been home to a variety of different resident artists, who are able to experiment with different plays and creative processes. These partners are different theaters who may not have a physical location, such as the Iron Crow Theatre. The Iron Crow is a group focused on bringing queer representation not just on to the stage, but also in the crew of these productions. Their production currently running, Mankind directed by Ann Turiano, tells the futuristic story of Jason and Mark who have become pregnant on accident in a world where females are extinct and abortion is illegal. They traverse these limits and try to find solutions to the problems that they are put in. This show discusses important contemporary topics such as reproductive rights and safe abortions on stage using satire to share this story. Iron Crow is offering a Loyola Student ticket price and this show is running until the end of October!

  1. Spotlighters Theatre  

Spotlighters Theatre is a local community theatre here in Baltimore that has been flourishing since the late 60s. This theater has productions that run roughly one month for a variety of different shows to be showcased. Their next production is opening at the end of October. Twelfth Night by Shakespeare tells the story of Viola, who has been separated from her twin Sebastian due to a shipwreck. Viola chooses to disguise herself as Cesario and ends up falling in love with Duke Orsino. The problem is that he is in love with Countess Olivia, and in turn Countess Olivia falls in love with Cesario thinking he is a man. This show is fun and funny, and available to students at a discounted price, as well as $10 tickets on Ten Spot Thursday (November 3rd, 20220  

  1. Theatre at Loyola!  

Last but not least we have our own theaters on campus, the evergreen players and the poison cup players have a phenomenal season lined up for us. These shows range from a variety of topics from a show surrounding the retelling of Thanksgiving, to a morality play to Shakespeare. They can do it all! The play Everybody directed by Jess Kingsley ‘23 opens at the end of November. This play follows Everybody through the journey of death, and the characters that they meet on the way. The play is funny, yet deep with the meaning and lesson of the play. Tickets will be going on sale in the coming month for $5 for students at the Box Office or $10 for non students at the Box Office and on TicketMaster.  

Nez is a junior from Weymouth, Ma. They are a Theatre major, and a Gender and Sexuality studies minor. In their free time you will most likely find them in the theatre as well as in the admissions office! Outside of Loyola, Nez is passionate about music, reading and photography.
