Ever since arriving at Florida State University (FSU), there seems to be an endless supply of Panda Express and desserts in the dining hall. It is super easy to find unhealthy options on or near campus. When walking quickly to class, you only think about what is most convenient and not the healthiest.

While it is essential to eat whatever you want, I, for the first time in my life, am craving fresh fruit and a salad every now and then. I also love the workout classes at the Leach and I have tried spin, yoga, step, kickboxing, etc. It is a great way to destress and challenge yourself in a new way. I am much more productive when I spend some time focusing on myself and not on my upcoming exam.

Shake Smart

You can always go to Shake Smart at the Leach after going to the gym or a workout class. They have a multitude of smoothies, açai bowls and oatmeal. I love Greens to Go smoothies with spinach, banana, pineapple, orange juice and protein. You can personalize your açai bowl or smoothie or choose some options on the menu. Shake Smart takes dining dollars and meal swipe exchanges.

Vale Food Co.

If you want an off-campus option, Vale Food Co., which has one location in College Town and one on Tennessee Street, has some great meals. You can order smoothies, açai bowls and build-your-own bowls. Some highlights on their menu are Buffalo Cauliflower, Sweet Potato Noodles and Ancho Pulled Chicken. They also have vegan and gluten-free options. I worked at Vale in my hometown, so I have tried multiple things on their menu. It’s all so delicious.

The sweet shop

I also highly recommend going to The Sweet Shop near Landis Green. While they are known for their delicious smoothies and bagel sandwiches, they sell fresh fruit cups and numerous different smoothies. It has become a weekly tradition with my friends to go to the Sweet Shop on Sunday mornings. There are so many incredible things on the menu at The Sweet Shop, so I can promise you that you can easily find something healthy and delicious.

SUWANNEE ROOM

Finally, I would try to look at the Suwannee menu beforehand to try to find some healthy options on the menu. The salad bar is a good bet, as you can make your salad with different toppings and vegetables.

Again, I just want to mention how having a positive relationship with food is important. It is all about balance and working on being your happiest self! Going to college is a huge adjustment, so finding your place on campus is much more essential.

A lot of times, hanging out with friends implies eating together. It can either be grabbing gelato at 1851 or going to the Student Union to grab pizza. Eating food is a great way to hang out with old friends and meet new people. I heard the phrase “freshman 15” a lot before I came to college, and was a little scared before I came to FSU. However, I learned the most important thing is to have a positive relationship with yourself and food.
