Spend Your “Time On” Indie-Pop Artist Ella Jane

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bowling Green chapter.

In need of new music? Ella’s got you covered.

From a high school English project, to her first US tour, Ella Jane is the definition of a rising pop star. Let me tell you a little bit about my “I knew them before they were big” artist.

who is ella jane?

Ella Jane Roth, 21 as of this past week, is a New York-born, indie artist who gained her fame after her final AP English project went viral on TikTok in 2020. Her song “Nothing Else I Could Do” was inspired by a line in The Great Gatsby. She attended Tufts University for a brief time before moving to Brooklyn, New York and finally has settled in Los Angeles, California for the time being.

What is her music like?

I instantly fell in love with her unique style of songwriting, her passion for literature makes her lyricism comparable to Taylor Swift. Her discography is like a 2000’s coming of age soundtrack you just can’t get enough of. Her debut album, This is Not What it Looks Like! came out September 10th, 2021, featuring 7 songs. And her sophomore album, Marginalia, featuring 9 songs, came out October 28th, 2022. She’s a dreamy mix of MUNA, Taylor Swift, Clairo, Phoebe Bridgers and Lizzie McAlpine. Literally what more could you ask for? Her music is perfect to put on when you are doing your homework, singing your heart out in the car, or dancing around your room.

Marginalia tour/album announcement.

Ella is touring the U.S. with 31 shows in different cities in the next few months. I scored tickets to her show in Columbus and it was absolutely amazing. We even got to meet her after the show! The venue was a small, quirky bar and a stage set up at the front of the room. Unlike some other concerts I have been to (i.e. nose bleeding for Harry Styles) Ella was right in front of us. It was safe to say I enjoyed the smaller concert setting way more than larger. Remember how I said Ella’s sound was comparable to Lizzie McAlpine, MUNA, and Taylor Swift? Well she definitely loves them too and knows her audience. The pre-show playlist was filled with the aforementioned artists, and me and the rest of the crowd had a blast singing together, awaiting her arrival on stage. She finally came out looking stunning in her embroidered corset with lyrics from “Party Trick” lining the top. Ella’s set list was practically her entire discography minus one or two songs and it was SO FUN. The energy in the building was phenomenal- just a bunch of girls (and a few guys) who love her music as much as I do, singing as loud as we possibly could. After she concluded her show, we stuck around making friends and looking at her cute merch she made herself. Ella appeared out of nowhere and started talking with people in the crowd, I literally turned around and she was there LOL. We made our way to her and introduced ourselves, gave her a hug and thanked her for the fun night. She was so happy to meet all of us and we even got a picture together. The fangirl in me was clearly shining through: I was BEAMING!

I had the best time and was over the moon for the rest of the night. There is something so magical about live music and the opportunity to connect with artists and fans alike. I love Miss Ella Jane and I’m happy to share her with the rest of the world, but I doubt it will be long before you hear her name in the news. She’s on the come up. If you want a new sound with familiar roots, check Ella out, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed!
