With midterm season in full swing, we could all use a study break every once in a while. My favorite break is taking a night in with my roommates, grabbing some snacks and curling up on the couch to watch one of our favorite shows. Here are my top 5 must watch shows that will give you a break from those pesky midterms, and keep you hooked from the very first episode.

Peaky Blinders

This show is for my history buffs! Peaky Blinders follows a real gang from post-WWII England. With Cillian Murphy as Thomas Shelby, the leader of the Peaky Blinders, the show follows the gang’s legal AND illegal business deals. There’s also lots of romance aspects for all of my “bad boy” trope lovers! It’s a show that even if you aren’t into history, you will still be hooked, and it has an amazing soundtrack too.

The 100

The 100 is for my Sci-Fi lovers! The 100 is based on a post-nuclear war world, where Earth became uninhabitable after a nuclear bomb destroyed it. Civilization moved to space, where life on a space station was the new normal. As resources ran out, 100 delinquent teens were sent back to earth as a “test run” to see if life could be sustained. With 7 seasons and lots of action, The 100 keeps you on the edge of your seat and is such a great binge-worthy show.

The chilling adventures of Sabrina

This show is based on the 90’s sitcom “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” but is a more modernized version. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina follows a teenage witch, navigating the darker side of magic while also managing a normal teenage life in high school. The show is incredibly funny, has some creepy aspects of course, and is the perfect show for the upcoming Halloween season.

Conversations with a Killer: The John Wayne Gacy Tapes

This show is a lot darker, but for my true crime lovers. This show is a documentary style and documents the crime of the notorious serial Killer John Wayne Gacy, how he was caught and how his crimes progressed. It talks to real law enforcement and others who met him, and even includes audio from recordings of the interrogation after he was arrested. This is a quick watch with only three episodes, but very interesting and is perfect for true crime lovers.

Our Father

TRIGGER WARNING: this show deals with sexual assault and possibly triggering topics. This is a documentary rather than a show, but one that I thought was worth including because it was so well written! Our Father discusses the crimes of Donald Cline, who was a fertility doctor that committed fraud through artificial insemination, linking himself and his DNA to 94 children. This was done to unsuspecting victims, and the show discusses the trauma with the actual victims and how they took matters into their own hands to deal with the monster that Donald Cline was after the law failed them. It is an empowering, but heartbreaking story, and shows the strength of the women, men and families who were victims of Cline. Again, major trigger warning for topics of sexual assault!

If you are in need of a study break this fall, definitely give these shows a watch! They are all sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. So grab your snacks, and cozy up for a night in with these 5 must watch shows!
