The Biggest Trends at New York Fashion Week Spring 2023

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

New York Fashion Week has come again, and here are the biggest trends that were seen on the runway.

Y2K

The 2000s have been back for a while now, and they seem to not be going anywhere. Designers like LaQuan Smith and Priscavera are still taking the best parts of the 2000s and remixing them for the 2020s. Fendi’s 25th-anniversary show also singlehandedly brought one of the most coveted bags from the 2000s, The Baguette, back.

Fiery Red

Marni, Christian Siriano, and Theory all featured bright reds on their runways. It seems the autumnal color will follow us into the spring as well.

Button-down Belly Windows

Alturzza and Rentrayage showed a unique way to wear button-down garments. Between classic button-down collared shirts to denim jackets, women just love to show off their stomachs, and more power to them!

Deconstruction

Messy is in. Remember Kourtney Kardashian’s so-ugly-it-sort-of-works 2022 Met gala look. Well, it seems it started a new trend with Elena Velez and Eckhaus Latta featuring deconstructed looks on their runways.

Regal Purple

Sergio Hudson, Area, Puma and LaQuan Smith featured beautiful, majestic and deep purples in their collections. This color will guarantee you many “Queen” comments on your next OOTD Instagram post.

Electric Blue

Jason Wu, Sergio Hudon, and Marni featured bright, deep blues all over their collections, making it one of the colors of the season.

Ruffles

Ruffles were all over the runway in varying degrees. Proenza Schouler, Carolina Herrera and Ulla Johnson went full throttle with the cutesy trend.

Stringy Details

Monse, Priscavera and Alturzza featured lace-up details in their collections, reminiscent of Christina Agulera’s iconic Dirrty era.

Leopard Print

Sergio Hudson featured some stunning leopard print matching sets in his collection. This print has always been associated with empowered, sexually liberated women. So, this could be interrupted as the designer standing in solidarity with women being liberated instead of oppressed. (To quote Olivia Rodrigo and Lily Allen: “Fuck You, Supreme Court”)

Cargo Pants

Tibi, Dion Lee, Brandon Maxwell, Jonathan Simkhai, Sandy Liang, and Fendi brought back cargo pants, especially, with the extra Y2K influence of them being low-rise pants.

Matching Sets

Matching sets were everywhere this fashion week. And is it any surprise? Euphoria‘s most fashionable character, Maddy Perez played by style icon and Balenciaga muse Alexa Demie, wears them almost every episode.

Maroon Leather

Coach featured maroon-colored leather on their clothing and on their new messenger bag, which the latter all of the fashion Twitter has been drooling over.

The New Look Comeback

Dior staples are making a comeback with Christian Siriano’s fit flare 50s-style ball gowns and Veronica Beard’s bar jackets. We’ll have to wait to confirm the official comeback with Dior’s upcoming show later this September.

Micro Skirts

Miu Miu singlehandedly brought back micro skirts from the 2000s with the 2022 collections, mainly their spring collection. Now, NYFW has hopped on the trend with Theophilio, Christian Cowan and Priscavera.

Underwear As Outwear

Collina Strada, Fe Noel, Fendi, Brandon Maxwell and Prabal Gurung brought back Jean-Paul Gaultier and Madonna’s signatures with underwear as outwear. Corsets have been on trend since Bridgerton premiered, by now it’s expanding to slip dresses, satin pajama-looking pantsuits and white undershirts.

The 2010s Are Back

Not only is Y2K back, but it seems so are the 2010s, with high low hems and neon making appearances in many collections

Hot Pink

Many designers have taken notes from Valentino’s Fuschia collections of 2022 like LaQuan Smith and Tom Ford.  While bubblegum pink was also featured in collections from Norma Kamali and Collina Strada, Fuschia is no doubt the reigning made of pink. With Fuschia becoming the mainstay of the uber-popular Barbiecore aesthetic, which is basically hot pink with minimal Y2K influence.

Sequins, Shine & Glitter

It was all about shine and shimmer at NYFW with Michael Kors, Norma Kamali, Tom Ford and Brandon Maxwell featuring an abundance of sequins on their runways. Tom Ford even went as far as to bring a Studio 54 twist into the 2020s.

Sheer

Fe Noel, Collina Strada, and LaQuan Smith used body positivity sheer fabrics in their NYFW collections.

Drop Waist

Due to the popularity of low-rise pants, many designers are moving the cinched waistline from the waist to the hips, making it a low-rise silhouette.

Latex and Leather

Latex and leather were fabrics seen all over NYFW, from Coach to Fendi. So, keep your leather jackets, skirts, etc. out when Spring comes. It seems you’ll be needing them.

Shades of Green

Dion Lee, Studio 189, Fendi, Aliette, Michael Kors, Norma Kamali, Prriscavera and Badgley Mischka all featured different shades of green, mainly bright lime green, in their collections. It seems green is gonna be the color of the season.

Bubble Hem

An 80s & 2000s staple, the bubble hem skirt or dress, is officially back. Naheem Khan, Carolina Herrera, Ulla Johnson, Proenza Schouler, Christian Siriano and Khaite all featured it in their collections.

Tangerine

Marni, Ph5, Private policy, Kim Shui, Markarian, Sally LaPointe and Monse all featured orange in their collections as the perfect tone to add some color to your wardrobe.

Capes

NYFW Spring 2023 was all about drama. Prabal Gurung and Marni showcased unique bubble capes that went from mini skirt length to hanging off the sleeves. While Christian Sirano and Badgley Mischka featured more traditional capes.

Stripes

Sergio Hudson, Carolina Herrera, and Phillip Lim all featured an abundance of stripes in their collections, making it one of the biggest patterns of the upcoming Spring season.

Low Rise Bottoms

From cargo pants to jeans, the low rise is officially back thanks to designers like Peter Do, Tibi, Sandy Liang, and LaQuan Smith featuring them in their collections.

Florals…Unremarkably

Carolina Herrera and Brandon Maxwell featured florals for spring…groundbreaking.

Florals…Remarkably

However, Carolina Herrera made up for her lackluster use of florals with their interesting 3D floral details, which were also featured in collections from Prabal Gurung.

Metallics

Gabriela Hearst featured some beautiful gold ensembles in her Spring 2023 collection. Prozenza Shcouler featured gold as well.

White Tank Tops

Brandon Maxwell showed us how to dress up a white tank top undershirt with his dressed-up-dressed-down collection.

Fringe

Norma Kamali, Prozena Schouler, Naheem Khan, Jonathan Simkhai, Bronx and Banco, Michael Kors, and Pat Bo all featured fringe in their collections from layered fringe to floor sweeping fringe. Designers are getting more and more experimental with their unique uses of fringe.

Neon

Fendi, Jason Wu, LaQuan Smith, Tory Burch, Brandon Maxwell, and Adam Lippes brought back one of the biggest 2010s trends; neon. No doubt spawned by Valentino’s recent affinity or fuschia, it’s time to break out your best 80s-inspired looks.

Long Denim Skirts

Low rise means hem lengths are getting longer, and for denim that means skirts. Marni, Ulla Johnson and Fendi featured floor-length denim skirts in their collections.

Peplum

Another 2010s trend that’s back; Peplum. At least Christian Siriano, Tory Burch, Collina Strada and Tibi made it more subtle or unique.

Sheer Glitter

Fe Noel brought an interesting take to the iconic naked dress with a sparkly, 70s disco influence.

High Low Hemlines

Kim Shui, Carolina Herrera, and Collina Strada are starting to bring back the 2010s trend of high-low dresses and the 2000s trend of asymmetrical dresses.

Tealish Mint

Prabal Gurung, Reem Arca and Tibi featured mint green with blue-ish undertones on their runways. This was also a big color amongst the blogger aesthetic in the 2010s.

Cutouts

Dion Lee and LaQuan Smith showed off some interesting cutouts in their collections, continuing the trend from the late 2010s.

Bell Sleeves

Proenza Scholer, Monse and Christian Siriano showed off extravagant bell sleeves in their collections. However, Badgley Mischka featured 3D floral-inspired bell sleeves on a lime green blazer in their collection, so they are just being an overachiever.

Preppy Style With A Twist

Along with micro skirts, Miu Miu’s 2022 collections of preppy looks with a sexual 2000s twist have become mainstays in the current fashion cycle. This preppy look seems to be staying around through collections from Monse and Sandy Liang.

Interesting Pantsuits

Michael Kors, Sergio Hudson, and Veronica Beard all featured interesting pantsuits with unique cuts and dimensions from different fabrics to different hem lengths to the fringe.
