Making the Most Out of Your College Town

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Moving hours away to a new city for school and adapting to a new life can be a little challenging at first. But going to college is hard enough with meeting new people and living without your parents for the first time, making the most out of your college town shouldn’t be. Here are a few ways you can have the best time in Tallahassee.

Vintage Shopping

I know Tallahassee does not have the most glamorous mall, but in what it lacks in department stores, Tallahassee makes up for second-hand clothing. There are so many unique thrift stores and vintage shops around town that are truly one of a kind. If you’re looking for your next tailgating outfit, head to Picked where they specialize in Florida State gear and apparel. Maybe your style is a little more retro. Avant-Garb has some of the coolest authentic vintage pieces dating all the way back to the 40s. How about a little bit of everything? The OtherSide Vintage is the place to be. The shop has everything from vinyl, to furniture, and even painting materials.

Food

I don’t know about you, but one thing my friends and I love to do is eat. And as much as I love the Chick-Fil-A on Tennessee Street, I needed to stop going so much before the drive-thru workers began to recognize me. So in hopes of trying out new restaurants in town, my friends and I created a shared note of new places we want to try out called our, “Tally Food List.” Now, whenever we’re indecisive about where we want to eat—which is practically every time we eat out—we reference our list and try to check off something we haven’t tried before. Our list has pushed us to try new restaurants and cafés around Tally that we would’ve never tried before and led me to find my new favorite pastry shop!

College Town

College Town is the heart of Tallahassee student life. Only two blocks from campus, College Town is full of restaurants, bars, and shops. Feeling confident in your pop culture knowledge? Check out Madison Social for Trivia Tuesdays where you can enter for your chance to win weekly prizes while chowing down on some tasty food. Spend some time browsing shops like Barefoot and Urban Outfitters where you can find cute new pieces. Or make your way to Recess, the rooftop club, for a fun night with friends. College Town is filled with lively spots to hang out with friends, offering something for everyone.

Nature

At first glance, Tallahassee may not seem to have a lot of nature spots, but you just need to know where to look. A calm secluded area is the LaFayette Heritage Trail Park. The park is home to many wildlife animals and includes a fishing pier, various hiking trails, and even an abandoned railroad in the middle of the forest. LaFayette Heritage Trail Park is one of my favorite spots for a walk along the water and it’s the perfect place to escape to after a long day. Another area that you need to check out is Wakulla Springs. It is only a 20-minute drive from Tallahassee and it is absolutely beautiful. Wakulla is one of the world’s largest freshwater springs and is known for its incredibly clear water during the Spring (pun intended).
