After 70 years, England’s longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away on Sept. 8, 2022. This news marks the beginning of a new era, as the Queen has overseen countless changes and dramatic shifts in both the UK and the world as a whole.

For folks outside of the UK (and perhaps even people within the UK), the Queen’s passing can open the door to a variety of questions. Most importantly: what happens next?

Who Is Next In Line For The Throne Now?

Since the Royal Family is a monarchy, becoming the next king or queen is an automatic birthright. Following Queen Elizabeth’s death, her eldest son, Charles, will become the King of England. While the coronation (or official crowning) may not take place for several months, sources have speculated that Charles may not take the moniker of King Charles III, due to “negative connations” associated with King Charles I and King Charles II. If this is the case, King Charles would choose a different name entirely—though this has not been confirmed.

What Does The Queen’s Death Mean For Harry And William?

While Charles is next in line for the throne, his heir is already decided. Following King Charles, Prince William—The Duke of Cambridge and husband of Kate Middleton—will take on the duty as King of England. After him, his children—Prince George (9), Princess Charlotte (7), and Prince Louis (4)—will become heir to the throne.

Despite leaving his royal duties, William’s brother, Harry, is still in line for the throne after Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prine Louis, respectively. Both Megan Markle and Duchess Kate will not be eligible for the throne, however, as they are not of royal blood. However, if Harry and Willliam become king, they would have the title of Queen—which is still pretty cool, if you ask me.

Do People Even Like King Charles III?

Because of the Queen’s popularity, King Charles has some pretty big shoes to fill. Not to mention, the public may still have a sour taste in their mouths from his marriage to the late Princess Diana—where he had an affair with his now wife, Camilla, for the duration of their marriage.

Not to mention, King Charles is the oldest monarch to take the throne. For this reason, the public may find his traditions, views, and policies outdated, and may even prefer his sons to take the throne. William and Kate are tough competition, TBH. They’re just so charming.

What Happens To The Corgis?

The question on all of our minds: what happens to the Queen’s corgis?

Since 1933, Queen Elizabeth has owned at least one corgi at any given time. At the time of her passing, the Queen left behind two corgis named Muick and Sandy, a Dorgi named Candy, and two Cocker Spaniels, according to Newsweek.

While we’re unsure of where exactly the Queen’s dogs will end up, there’s no doubt that they’ll remain in the family. It’s what she would’ve wanted.
