The 6 Biggest Winter 2012/2013 Trends To Look Out For

This is a sponsored feature. All opinions are 100% from Her Campus.

If you injected your closet with trendy oxblood and totally of-the-moment peplums back in September, it’s time to shake up your closet again. Winter fashion doesn’t just mean bundling up under a thousand layers of sweaters and scarves – it’s definitely possible to continue dressing like your fabulous self even through the coldest months of the year. Here’s how to rock six new trends from now into 2013.

Baroque

Top, $69, Urban Outfitters. Jeans, $78, Levi’s. Loafers, $79, DV by Dolce Vita.  Earrings, $48, Kate Spade.

During the seventeenth century, baroque art became wildly popular in Western Europe. The ornate, intricate designs appeared in sculpture, painting, and architecture – and now, the style has been revived for winter fashion. Look for pieces with flowery embroidery, like the peplum top above, luxe brocades and jacquards, or kaleidoscopic prints. This outfit would be perfect for class or a casual night out.

Velvet

Sweater, $95, J. Crew. Skinny velvet pants, $69.95, Gap. Loafers, $49.90, Zara. Bag, $80, Topshop. Nail polish, $8, Essie.

Velvet is popping up everywhere, from skinny jeans to party dresses. Colored velvet adds a sumptuous twist to colored denim – you look like you’re front row at Fashion Week, but you feel like you’re in your pajamas. When paired with a cozy sweater, you’re ready to hit the library in style.

Camo

Jacket, $96, Topshop. Dress, $38.70, ASOS. Tights, $10, HUE. Boots, $59.94, DSW. Headband, $15, Pier 1.

The military trend has been going strong for years now, but this winter brings a new twist: camo print. Jackets and skinny jeans are the two most widespread versions of this trend, but we’ve also seen it popping up on tees and accessories, too. Here, we balanced the toughness of the jacket with a flirty dress and a sparkly headband.

Oversized coats

Coat, $110, H&M. Sweater, $67.99, Romwe. Corduroys, $74.99, Current/Elliott. Tote, $59, Baker’s. Flats, $98, Banana Republic.

The coats on the Fall 2012 runways practically swallowed up the models, but a more moderate silhouette works in real life. Look for straight, streamlined cuts without embellishment for a modern feel. It’s easy to feel boxy when wearing this shape, so show off your legs with your favorite pair of skinnies.

Ankle boots

Sweater, $12, H&M. Skirt, $39.90, Chic Wish. Ankle boots, $49.95, H&M. Scarf, $24, Topshop. Tights, $11, HUE.

Boots are winter’s most beloved shoe. This year, ankle boots are feeling fresh again. Opt for straight, simple lines with a substantial heel and not too many embellished details. The boots are cut low on your leg, so show off your limbs with a flirty mini in a bold color and tights. ‘Tis the season!

Block heels

Blazer, $70, Topshop. Blouse, $19.80, Forever 21. Denim leggings, $39, Urban Outfitters. Necklace, $38, Nordstrom. Pumps, $69.96, Ivanka Trump.

They’re not quite kitten heels, but they’re not your traditional pumps, either. This winter, look for pumps with a low, square heel for a retro feel. When paired with a blazer, blouse, and skinnies, this look could easily take you from class to your internship. We promise, the low heel isn’t just for your mom anymore!
