Tight Ends: Everything You'll Ever Need to Know About How to Wear Tights

Thursday, December 15, 2011

As the weather gets colder, black leggings become an outfit staple for almost every collegiette™. Sure, leggings are warm and comfortable, but over the last few years they’ve become something else as well – boring!

This season, step away from the leggings and reach for a stylish pair of tights instead. Tights are a favorite trend of celebrities and fashion designers this season, and for good reason. Hosiery is available for every college budget, comes in a ton of colors and patterns, and can be dressed up or dressed down to work with any outfit. So whether your fashion icon is Taylor Swift or Rihanna – tights are a fun addition to every girl’s wardrobe.

This Season’s Tights Trends and How to Wear Them

Opaque black tights are timeless, flattering and add instant sophistication to any look. But although black tights are very chic, this season’s hottest trends are a little bit more fun. Instead of regarding tights as you do leggings (black, boring, basic…), think of them as a statement piece of your look. With different colors, patterns and textures to choose from, there’s no reason not to let a great pair of tights become the focal point of an outfit!

Unusual Colors

It’s pretty easy to find tights in any color you could every think of – but most of them aren’t all that practical for the daily life of a 20-something year old girl. That neon blue pair may look great on the runway, but for class? Not so much.

Don’t let those crazy colors scare you away though – there are a ton of colored options that are classy and practical. Deep jewel tones like emerald green, navy blue and dark maroon are all gorgeous hosiery hues that can be worn day and night. Sindonie Goldman, PR Manager at Wolford London, a top hosiery brand, says, “opaques are fantastic for every shape” because they give “a smooth look to the leg.”

This is awesome, I have always wanted to pull off tights because I used to wear them when I was little and loved them!

I found a fabulous pair of black lace tights at Ann Taylor Loft. I wore them the other day for a holiday choir concert with a black dress and red heels. I also wore them on Thanksgiving to church with a red dress from Anthropologie and a pair of black oxford style heels. I also wear colored tights all the time -- I have purple, dark red, teal, and brown. I usually wear them either with a comfy black sweater dress or with a gray felted wool mini skirt from J. Crew.

I'm such a sucker for tights this year. I bought like 5 pairs of them when I found them on sale at Target.

I hate when my tights bunch up around the waist. I finally figured out wearing spandex shorts, I have underarmour ones I wear under running shorts, really helps prevent any bunching and discomfort. They also keep you super warm!

Liz- Target has five dollar opaque in pretty much every color.

My problem with tights is that I always manage to get a rip or tear & spending $12 on something that I may wear once is just not something I'm willing to do. Any great bargains on tights?

Love these pictures of tights that are not just black! I'm trying to not always wear blue jeans to class, and some funky tights I think is the answer.

A tip i learned in ballet: if a run or hole is starting on your tights, dab a bit of clear nailpolish around the edges of the tear. It will stop the tear from getting any larger!

Cute ideas with the colored tights!
