Highlights from the 2012 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

Last night, many collegiettes (and collegents) ditched the books for one hour in order to watch this year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Even if you didn’t watch the lingerie-filled event, I’m sure the rampant tweets about the show kept you updated. But interpreting those tweets is another story. Lucky for you, I’m here to share the highlights with you. (Photo)

The Lingerie

The minimal clothing makes it hard to remember that Victoria’s Secret is hosting a fashion show. Leave it to the lingerie company to create increasingly outrageous ensembles each year. From Doutzen Kroes’ makeshift poodle costume to Toni Garrn’s flower power ensemble, this year’s looks were very avant garde. Whether you adored or hated the lingerie, you have to admit that the collections were far from boring. (Photo)

The Ambiance

Similar to the outfits, the fashion show’s stage was something to talk about. While some themes required minimal sets, others were anything but basic. Between the acrobats during the Circus theme and Victoria’s Secret PINK’s pinball machine, the set almost took the spotlight away from the models.

Bieber

Oh yes, Justin Bieber did not hold back. Though he started off slow- the pop star sang an acoustic version of “As Long As You Love Me” first- Bieber fueled the stage with an upbeat performance of “Beauty and the Beat.” On a completely fashion-nerd note, his ensembles were very reminiscent of Bieber circa 2010. Where were his (presumably faux) hipster glasses? For the Biebs would not be able to effectively check out those PINK models without them. Justin—we all saw that. Now your breakup with Selena Gomez is starting to make more sense. (Photo)

Rihanna

If the extravagant array of bras and panties weren’t sartorially pleasing for you, Rihanna’s outfits gave style groupies something to gush over. The scandalous black gown as well as the sheer pink dress offered a fashion-forward twist to the sultry runway. Her two performances were great; however, my attention was on those pearl-embellished sunglasses. As a side note, the superstar felt it was necessary to cop a feel of one of the models. Chains and whips may excite her, according to “S&M,” but Bieber didn’t even take it that far!  (Photo)

Bruno Mars

Though Mars’ performance didn’t include a lively dance number or a sultry black dress, the singer still put on a fabulous show.  Along with an impressive band, Mars performed “Locked Out a Heaven” and “Young Girls.” Mars also got a little flirty with Barbara Palvin during the Calendar Girls theme. These musicians just can’t help themselves! (Photo)

The Models

There’s something humbling about watching models sing and dance to Justin Bieber. Maybe, in some other universe, we’re just like them. Maybe. Unlike the Victoria’s Secret Angels, collegiettes don’t travel to chic countries and roll around in rose petals. Unless you do (lucky).  In addition to the usual suspects- Adriana, Alessandra, Miranda and many more- some of fashion’s top models also strutted down the catwalk. Thank you for making an appearance, Karlie Kloss and Joan Smalls—we fashionistas really appreciated it. (Photo)

Spotlight on Swanepoel

Though we all have our favorites- I secretly hope that I will magically turn into Miranda Kerr so I can live happily ever after Orlando Bloom- it’s no surprise that the one-hour program highlights one Angel every year. And this year’s honor went to none other than Candice Swanepoel. Wait… doesn’t she look familiar? Besides her bustling model career, fashionistas will also recognize Swanepoel for escorting Rag & Bone’s Marcus Wainwright and David Neville to this year’s Met Ball Gala. From her uncoventional beginnings- Swanepoel is from South Africa and began her glamorous career as a fit model- I really do think that she’s here to stay! (Photo)

The Bods

As expected, the fashion show highlighted an array of enviable abs and flat stomachs. Consequently, don’t be surprised if you forgo the holiday cookies and hit the gym twice as hard. It’s okay collegiettes—the jealousy you’re experiencing is normal. In a way, we can actually thank the Victoria’s Secret Angels for motivating us.
