For every trend we love right now, there are approximately five former trends that we’re embarrassed to say, “ I tried that once.” It’s time to swallow your pride for a couple minutes and take a stroll down memory lane. Since we’re older, wiser, and chicer, let’s remember the lessons these trends taught us (but forget that we ever wore them). Here’s to a more fashionable future!
1. Silly Bandz
I don’t mean to brag, but I can happily say that I was against this trend from the start. Paying for rubber bands? Sorry, the junk drawer in my kitchen has plenty to “rock.” I’m sure it was fun to compare Silly Bandz with your crush during math class; however, this trend made its followers look like they just got home from day camp (in a creepy, uncomfortable way). Thankfully, we’ve said good-bye to Silly Bandz and rekindled our love of functioning, forward-thinking bracelets. Once again, everything is right in the world.
Unfortunately, I remember it like it was yesterday: toothy smile, hair in braids, and a pair of overalls with tiny, purple flowers on the seams. Okay, maybe my fashion prime wasn’t in the second grade. It was quasi-cute to wear overalls when were in elementary school, but we know better now- overalls are both unstylish and unflattering. To add more salt in the wound, Katie Holmes donned a pair of overalls just last year. Bad, Katie Holmes, bad!
3. Monochromatic Denim (For that Matter)
Contrary to Justin and Britney’s belief, monochromatic denim was never cool. But they weren’t the only ones at fault. Denim on denim has been spotted at Chloe S/S 2010 and probably on you. Deny it all you want, but your mom made you take those awkward pictures at the mall’s photo store…and you were probably sporting high-waisted jeans and an oversized jean jacket. Now that we’re older and wiser, we know that pairing a denim chambray with black jeans is chic. Monochromatic denim, on the other hand, can rest in peace.
4. Velour Track Suits
Wasn't it the coolset thing to rock your favorite velour hoodie and sweat pants during those awkward middle school years? Sure they were comfortable- and it was slightly thrilling to feel like you were in a Juicy Couture ad- but it was a major fashion faux pas. Paired with a velour bag? I blame Paris Hilton and Britney Spears (love you both, but it’s a major fashion don’t). From now on, we only rock this tragic trend on three occasions: lounging around the house, cleaning your room, and hitting the gym.
5. Peasant Skirts
Peasant blouses are boho-chic. Peasant skirts are not. The awkward silhouette is neither here nor there. Let’s not forget how hard they were to style. Blazer? Too polished. Oxford skirt? Too much coverage. Graphic T-shirt? No thank you. In the end, you were forced to sport an ill-fitting tank top. Beware, collegiettes: peasant skirts are still out there. Shall we combat this fashion faux pas with sleek maxi skirts and contemporary hi-low hemlines? I think so!
