Healthy Eating for 2016

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

Starting 2016 with a healthy diet can be a difficult task after indulging in plenty of holiday treats and big festive dinners for the past few weeks. Some of us may feel as though we don’t know where to start or how to eat properly anymore, so I’ve compiled some tips to help you get back on track!

1. Make a meal plan

Meal plans can help set you up so you aren’t checking the fridge every 5 minutes for food. It’ll help you feel discipline, and reduces the risk of eating everything in sight, since it’s already planned out. Here’s a great example posted by Buzzfeed that contains recipes and a grocery list.

2. Educate yourself

Watching documentaries and reading books on nutrition can be a great way to get all the knowledge you need to eat healthy. My personal favourite is In Defense of Food, which just came out this past December, and the book Eat Pretty by Jolene Hart, which teaches you how to obtain beauty from the inside.

3. Grocery shop right

Go grocery shopping with a list to make sure you don’t wander away and pick up your guilty pleasures. Most of your food should be in the produce section. Lastly, never shop with an empty stomach!

4.  Use Pinterest/Instagram and blogs

Using social media containing healthy recipes is perfect when you’re out of ideas! Most of the time, they show what goes into them and how to make them, which is perfect when you don’t want to flip through pages of a cookbook.

5. Eat the rainbow

Keep your plate colourful to make sure you get all the vitamins and nutrients you need!

It’s a tough task to get back into the healthy lifestyle, but hopefully these tips will help you ease into it! Good luck, Hawks!

Wilfrid Laurier

You will typically see me with a large cup of tea and browsing social media under the fairy lights and reading up on my favourite lady bosses (Mindy Kaling let me be you please). Also my trivia regarding superheroes is endless. I have more music than time to listen to and someone definitely should consider taking away my blogging privileges. My love for pop culture is limitless and Netflix is the true MVP in my opinion. Contributor writer for HerCampus Laurier Stalk me and let's be friends here: Insta & Twitter: webofem
