Campus Style: When You Don’t Know What to Wear

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wash U chapter.

Name: Caroline Kay
Home Town: Washington, D.C.
Class of: 2015

AH: What are you currently wearing?
CK: I’m wearing Henry Beguelin booties, Hue jeggings, a tank top from Urban Outfitters, a leather jacket from Urban Outfitters, and a fur vest from my grandma.

AH: How would you describe your style?
CK: It’s hard to classify my style. Sometimes people label me as hipster, some people say I’m preppy, but honestly I just wear what I like. I’ll find something in a store and I will buy it and pair it with something that I also like. I hate pants. I have two pairs of actual pants. I think they’re constricting and I feel like I’m suffocating when I wear them. I only wearing jeggings or leggings, but nobody knows that because they look like real pants. I also love stripes. I wear stripes every day; that’s my go-to thing when I don’t know what to wear.

AH: So, when you have those days when you’re struggling and you don’t know what to wear, but you have to leave in 2 minutes, what else would you put on?
CK: I would put on a pair of leggings, probably these booties, and probably a striped t-shirt. If it’s cold out, I will wear the fur vest and maybe if it’s not cold out, I will wear the fur vest.

AH: How did you settle on this go-to outfit?
CK: I always know that I want to be comfortable, so I put on the jeggings, and then the booties just work well with everything because they’re gray and black. Then I always try to think of a way I can incorporate the fur vest into my outfit; I love the new leather jacket and fur vest combination because it looks like a new jacket within itself. Then just whatever shirt looks good under all of it.

AH: Do you have anything that you wear every day?
CK: I wear the same earrings every day – these blue ones and these hoops next to them, and the hoop in my cartilage. I also wear this necklace that I got from Tiffany’s, this gold love bracelet that my grandma got me for my birthday, and this green yarn bracelet that’s from one of our sisterhood events at AEPhi that shows that we’re all connected. Each of my AEPhi sisters in PC ’12 has one.

AH: That’s cute. Okay, what are your favorite places to shop to create the looks you like?
CK: Madewell, J.Crew, Urban Outfitters, Cusp, Forever 21, H&M, Bloomingdales, and this store in Aspen called Pitkin County Dry Goods.

AH: What does style mean to you?
CK: It’s a way of expressing myself to other people who may get the wrong idea of me or just not know me at all. It’s a way to establish myself in the community as somebody who’s not a slob and knows how to present herself. It’s also something in my life that I feel like I have control over, as opposed to many other things. Like, I may not be able to control my grades or where I go in life, but I can control my style. Boom.
