Wake 101: A Wake Up Call

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

It’s a fact: every student at Wake wishes that there were more hours in a day. Well, it turns out that there actually are. These hours exist in a murky, unexplored dimension known as The Morning.

Ah yes, the morning: the sunshine poking through your shades gently tickling you awake, the birds singing sweet tunes outside your window, the demolition crew excavating dirt with large machinery just behind your residence hall. Peaceful, right? All jokes aside, mornings get bad reps! If you can avoid groggily calculating the exact amount of minutes and seconds of sleep you’re missing out on, the morning can and should be used to your advantage.

The Miller Fitness Center opens at 5:30am each day. Okay, woah, you don’t have to go that crazy – baby steps here, people. But in all honestly, finding time to exercise during a day packed with classes, homework, and club meetings can be a workout in itself. A simple solution is getting your workout in first thing in the morning. If you can get yourself into a routine, this can give your day a healthy start and leave you feeling alert for your first class. A fitter body and a fitter GPA just might be worth skipping that third snooze alarm.

Not a member of the whole fitness bandwagon? That’s cool, too. Another way to get those feel-good juices flowing is to have a good outfit and hair day – like, really good. Taking the time to boost your self confidence in a positive way can make all the difference when heading into a stressful day. So take the extra time in the morning to enjoy a long shower and to pick out something to wear that reflects your best, most favorite self. Look good, feel good, do good. Simple as that. Dress for success.

And if you absolutely, positively cannot bring yourself to unravel from your luxurious $12.99 Target plush blanket (and let’s be honest, we all know which one I’m talking about), simply sitting up in bed to quietly reflect on your upcoming day can better prepare you for what is to come! Make a To-Do list, jot down some things you’re looking forward to for the day; these minor adjustments to your morning routine will keep your educational, emotional, and spiritual priorities in check.

So do the impossible tomorrow – set that alarm for just a wee bit earlier, and watch how your day transforms. Rise and shine, Wake!
