Fashion in the Forest: How to Layer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Since fall is finally beginning and it’s getting a little cooler, I thought this week we would talk about fall layering. I love fall and I love being able to wear cardigans and cute layers over my button downs and t-shirts. However, I am always a little concerned that I will go over board and end up not being able to move because there are so many layers. That is not fun; so here are some tips on how to be warm in the fall and winter seasons while still maintaining your fashionable reputation!

Tip 1:
The easiest way to layer is to take a sweater or t-shirt and wear a button-down or chambray as a cardigan. This is really easy because you can still use your summer/ early fall clothing. Then, when it gets cooler, just add another layer or make your base layer thicker! Remember when you are doing this to not disregard your base layer. Don’t be afraid to use a pattern or something textured!

Tip 2: Use a crew neck sweater or sweatshirt as a pull-over on top of a button-down or other type of collared shirt. If I wear a crew neck sweater by itself, I always feel frumpy, so this is a good way to mix it up. This would also be an excellent time to experiment with patterns like we talked about a couple weeks ago!

Tip 3: Vests…vests scare me because I am very cold natured. I am always very concerned that a vest won’t keep me warm because my arms are exposed! However, I now have the answer for you cold-natured girls who still love vests. Try a look like tip 2 where your outer layer is a warm sweater; then put a vest on top for another layer of warmth and wind repellent awesome-ness. Because your base layers are warm, it will be ok that your arms are exposed! I can’t wait to try this come winter!

Final thoughts: First of all, if it’s not too chilly outside, but you’re still feeling the desire to layer, just go for it! Cuff your jeans and wear flats or some type of shoe that doesn’t require socks. This way the warmth of your top will be balanced by the coolness of your bottom! Secondly, when layering under pullovers, it normally looks better if your bottom layer is peeking out. This gives your look a bit more variety and helps the bottom layer from bunching up. Finally, rolling up your sleeves really helps complete this look. By rolling the bottom layer over the top so that the bottom cuff peeks out, the look doesn’t feel too formal!

Now, collegiettes, it is time to go out and try new things! And I would love to see pictures if you try one of the ideas! Email me successful experiments or ideas for next week’s article at hcfashionintheforest@gmail.com
