Do’s and Don’ts: Downtown

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Virginia Tech chapter.

Do’s:

  • Do take cash – bars such as TOTS and Big Al’s have cover fees.

  • Do pregame – that way you don’t have to spend as much money downtown.

  • Do go to happy hour at El Rod’s – what’s better than a cheap margarita?!

  • Do order a rail at TOTS – tradition here at Tech; personally, sour rails are the best!

  • Do go to Benny’s or DP Dough after a long night downtown – nothing beats drunk munchies.

  • Do bar hop – start out at Sharkey’s, make your way to Big Al’s and then end the night at TOTS.

  • Do go to TOTS Tuesday – if you haven’t been at least once, I suggest going. It’s hilarious listening to drunk people try to sing karaoke; which leads me to the next on my list…

  • Do sing karaoke at TOTS Tuesday – hey, you only live once.

  • Do play corn hole at TOTS – regardless of the fact that it is a bar….

Don’ts:

  • Don’t take a credit/debit card – this is mainly because you don’t want to find the next morning that you spent $100 at the bar the previous night (limit yourself by bringing cash) and also because you don’t want to go through all the hassles when you mistakenly lose or leave your card at the bar.

  • Don’t wear heels – take it from me, going downtown in heels is awful. Don’t listen to anyone who tells you otherwise. I’d rather be comfy than suffer when going out; save yourself the humiliation and the next-day-blisters.

  • Don’t go to TOTS before 11 – as no one will be there.

  • Don’t go to Hokie House after 11 – sorry but, playing pool in a lit room listening to country music is the last thing I want to do when I go downtown.

  • Don’t order a rail at TOTS before last call – otherwise be prepared to chug.

  • Don’t use the bathrooms at TOTS – at least try to avoid at all costs…yea, it’s that bad.
