Five Winter Cure-Alls

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Vanderbilt chapter.

Let’s face it, ladies: Winter weather can be a Vandy girl’s worst enemy – dry, pale skin, puffy noses, unshaven legs, dull hair…. the list continues. Luckily, you can ease your winter woes with just a few simple products! I have compiled this list of my beauty go-to’s to help you through these cold months. You’ll be looking so hydrated and refreshed, you’ll think it’s tailgating season again!

1.    Biosilk Silk Therapy

If you haven’t heard of Biosilk, you’ve been missing out. This amazing serum can seriously beautify any part of your body. I put a quarter-sized amount in my hair post-shower before drying to keep it soft and shiny. If you usually blow-dry your hair straight, this will greatly reduce your hairspray use, because the silky formula keeps your hair frizz-free! Biosilk can also be used in place of body oil or lotion: As soon as you get out of the shower (before you towel-dry), rub a small amount all over your body. Air-dry or pat your skin down with a towel for silky smooth skin that will last all day! I have also used a small amount to remove pesky eye makeup.  The perfect product? I think so. Also, it smells freaking delicious. I’m just saying.

2.   Ahava Mineral Hand Cream

I’ve always struggled to find a hand cream that has lasting effects without being greasy. One day, I stumbled upon this stuff in TJ Maxx, of all places, and fell in love! This company uses Dead Sea minerals in all of its products, which hydrate and nourish your skin beautifully. The smell is really gentle (not salty, no worries!) and it improves the look and feel of your skin after just one use. If you like this product, try their bath salts and other lotions! All-natural and SO great for your skin.

3.   Bare Escentuals Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Polish

You know that beautiful moment when you find the perfect lip-gloss? It smells like vanilla and honey, tastes like peppermint, makes your lips tingle, and all of a sudden you look like Angelina Jolie? If you haven’t tried Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Polish, this may sound like something out of a dream. But voila, it exists! This stuff is seriously the best thing to hit lips since kissing. It comes in a big tube that lasts forever, hydrates with the best of them, and tastes/smells delicious. Not to mention, the tingling makes your lips visibly fuller and healthier. And best of all, the shades all have fun stripper names like “Bambi” and “Bunny.” A shade I wear that is flattering on all skin types is Candi, a warm pink.

4.   St. Ives Naturally Clear Apricot Scrub

This gentle, sweet-smelling scrub is perfect for sloughing off that dry winter skin, and has been a mainstay in my bedtime routine for as long as I can remember. It is gentle enough to be used everyday, but can also be used in place of a regular cleanser (I love Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser) a few times a week. I especially recommend this product to those of us with oilier skin, although it really is gentle enough for every skin type.

5.    Ahava Lavender Bath Salt

If you can’t tell, I really love Ahava Dead Sea Salt products. This bath salt definitely sticks out to me, though, because of its wonderful hydrating and relaxing properties. Unfortunately, I don’t know of any Vandy dorms that have bathtubs… but as soon as you get home for Spring Break, pour about a cup of this stuff into warm bath water and soak for about 20 minutes. As soon as you step out, your muscles will feel relaxed and your skin will be super soft!

Happy Winter :]
