The weather is getting cooler — finally — and it happened overnight. Burlington went from being a cesspool of heat and sweat to being cool, crisp, and beautiful. Like the vast majority of girls anywhere, proclaiming my love of fall is my favorite thing to do. Apple season is coming, which means loading the healthy fruit with cinnamon and sugar and pretending I have a healthy diet. The leaves are changing so I can scoff at the tourists stopping on I89 to take pictures, but also doing so myself when no one is around. But best of all, the cozy layers of fall fashion are upon us. Here is a list of my favorite fall styling pieces and what to do with them in the transition of cool mornings and warm afternoons.

Flannel

This one is pretty self explanatory. If you go to UVM, chances are pretty high that you own one. The styling for a flannel is very versatile, totally suitable for any person. Oversized and over leggings, you are ready for a cozy night outside or your 8:30 psych class. With a vest, you’re prepared for apple picking and pumpkin carving. You can even roll up the sleeves! And for the more feminine dressers, fear not! Tucked into a skirt or tied at the waist over a dress, you are warm, trendy, and still feminine. Flannels are also the perfect layer underneath your distressed denim or leather jacket.

Chunky Sweaters

Sweater weather is chant on campus as soon as school starts. When listing the reasons you love fall, thick sweaters promptly follows pumpkin spice lattes. And with good reason! Similar to the flannel, sweaters are easily dressed up or down. Coming in many varieties, there are sweaters for every person. Oversized, shrunken, off the shoulder, open weave — so many options to choose from! And you can wear them on their own, or with something underneath.

Corduroys

Remember being a little kid in the ‘90s and having those thick cords that were pulled out around Thanksgiving? Yeah, those have been upgraded. Opt for a dark, jewel-tone, such as emerald or amethyst, and you have statement pants that pull a look together. If you’re feeling it, you can even try a print. Cords are comfortable and cozy and keep you from wearing leggings every day because lets be honest, thats what everyone wants to be wearing.

Boots

I have a particular affinity towards boots. I wore the soles off my pair last year (note to self: do not wear nice leather boots when there is salt all over the sidewalks), and I just bought a new pair that I love. Knee-high, ankle length, booties — any way you want em. Boots are great because they dress up a pair of leggings, keep your legs warm when you’re wearing a skirt or dress, and are comfy. Win-win.

Thick Socks

And finally, what is fall without cute socks peeking out from the top of your boots? Cabled, knee-high, or covered in little pictures of cats, socks are how you can show your true self amidst all the flannel, sweaters, and boots everyone else is wearing.
