Food Blog: Dynamite Japanese Baked Mussel

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

This is probably one of my favorite recipes of all time! If you never had baked mussel before, definitely give this a try! I love making this as an appetizer for the weekend or make a big batch for the holidays. These mussels are very savory and cheesy and my favorite part is the crunch you get from the panko breadcrumbs. Give this a try and you will not regret it.

*makes about 21 mussels

Prep time: 20 minutes

Cook time: 25 minutes

Ingredients:

A box of Mussels (pre-cooked)

½ tbsp. of butter

Sriracha Sauce (as much or as little as you prefer)

Japanese Kewpie Mayonnaise (you can find this at most Asian supermarkets)

1/3 cup of panko bread crumbs

Parmesan Cheese (as much or as little as you prefer)

Prepping the ingredients can be time consuming, but this is the type of dish where you need all the ingredients in front of you. First, you will need to clean the mussels very well. Mussels tend to have residue, therefore, a good cleanse is necessary. I recommend taking each shell and scrubbing it very well before proceeding. I personally like the mussels cut into pieces, however, if you like it whole that works fine as well. If you guys do not know what dynamite sauce is, it is basically Japanese mayo and sriracha combined. This is the sauce that is served in most sushi restaurants nowadays. Japanese mayo definitely makes a big difference in this recipe. Last thing to do before assembling is to pop the butter into the microwave for about 10 seconds or until melted. Mix the panko breadcrumbs and butter. Now, we are finally ready to cook!

1.     Assembling is very easy. First, take a baking sheet pan, and align it with aluminum foil. Place all the shells on a single layer. Next, fill each shell with the pieces of mussel.

2.     After each shell is filled, take a spoonful of the dynamite sauce and fill each mussel. (Be generous with this! Make sure that the sauce is covering the mussels)

3.     Sprinkle the panko breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese on top of each mussel.

4.     Lastly, pop this into the oven at 375 degrees for about 25 minutes or until golden brown. Enjoy!
