Noelle McGivern: Blondes Do Have More Fun

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

Noelle McGivern is a second year at UGA from Cartersville, Georgia. Studying Advertising with minors in Student Affairs and New Media, she can be found taking pictures around campus, singing and playing some tunes on her guitar, or at any The Lonely Biscuits concert. She’s interned at the International Student Life Office, been on Miracle’s Media Committee, and is currently writing blog posts for Weddings in Athens. You sadly won’t see her around this fall, though, because she’ll be studying abroad in Florence, Italy!

Why do you love UGA?

I love the city of Athens, which is what drew me here when choosing a university. The huge music and art scene as well as the people are incredible. The people here aren’t afraid to be themselves, which was hard to come by in my hometown.

What’s your favorite organization you’re involved in?

Miracle has to be my favorite because of the great work it accomplishes. There are so many different ways to get involved depending on your strengths, so there a niche for everyone. I also love that everyone involved are all working towards a common goal, really creating a sense of community.

What sparked your passion for photography?

I would steal my mom’s iPhone just so I could take pictures and would always have her camera out on family road trips. After being complimented on my pictures and realizing I wasn’t half bad, my parents bought me a proper camera. I started off by taking pictures for family and friends, then word spread, and more people asked me to shoot them. Now I take pictures for seniors and for Weddings in Athens.

What types of photos are your favorite to shoot?

Definitely portraits! I like doing style shoots where I can coordinate the models’ outfits and the location. That way I can be the creative director of the photo shoot. I like to find local models by stalking people’s Instagrams and sending them messages to ask if they’ll model for me.

What’s the most exciting thing about going to Italy?

Just being in a new place with new inspirations. I’m a firm believer in people’s surroundings influencing them and their work. I think being in a new environment is going to take my photography to a new level, especially being in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I think I’ll be pushed outside of my comfort zone.
