Pretty In Pink and Red: Valentine’s Day Nails

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Love is in the air and when February 14 rolls around, you want to feel and look your best!  Whether you’re going out with friends or having a hot night out with your guy, you’ll want to be stepping out in style. Once you have the perfect outfit, pair it with one of these Valentine’s Day-inspired nail designs and you’ll have the ultimate love day look!

Candy Heart Nails

Valentine’s Day is full of chocolates and other yummy sweets.  These candy heart nails give your fingers a pop of color and allow you to customize them with cute Valentine’s Day sayings like I Love You , Kiss Me, Be Mine, XoXo or Cutie.  To get these sayings on your nails, we suggest using a tooth-pick or thin brush to apply the letters.  The blog we found this cute nail design from recommends using these colors for the perfect candy heart nails:

  • Thumb: OPI Lucky Lucky Lavender
  • Index: OPI Bikini Envy
  • Middle: OPI Banana Bandanna
  • Ring: OPI Italian Love Affair
  • Pinkie: OPI Alpine Snow

Glitter

What girl doesn’t love glitter?  Adding some to your traditional nail color is a fun twist, especially for the holidays when you want to add that extra punch. Below are some fun, sparkly designs inspired by the day of love!
For the first look of red and pink glitter pick your favorite red and pink polish and alternate them on each finger.  For the ring finger, pick a sparkly red like Essie Ruby Slippers!
The second look is actually a stick-on polish strip by Sally Hansen Salon Effects in the color, Bling It On.  These nail strips are awesome and last as long as normal nail polish.  They have forty different options and can be found at your local drugstores or super centers.
The third look is from the Kardashian collection for Nicole by OPI, it’s called Kim-pletely in Love. The blog we found the pink glitter tipslook from paired the sheer pink polish with Wet n’ Wild Hallucinate for the tips.  If you’re looking for a nail design that doesn’t scream Valentine’s Day, but still fits in with the day, this is the perfect choice.

Hearts

Nothing says Valentine’s Day more than hearts, so why not throw some on your nails!
The nail design with the heart on the ring fingeris one of our favorites.  It’s a cute, yet subtle way to show your love on Feb. 14!  To get this look, pick out your favorite pink and add a heart with a Q-tip or small brush in white polish.
Another great heart look includes a red heart with a matte finish.  The blogger we found this idea from suggests painting all your nails with OPI Ulta-mate Berry Beautiful, then topping it with Essie’s Matte About You.  Place a heart sticker on the desired nails and coat the stickered nails with top coat for some shine.

Kisses

There will be lots of people puckering up for that special someone on Valentine’s Day, but for those of us single girls on Valentine’s Day, what better way to show you’re your kisses than on your nails.  These kiss nailshave a pink under layer and then were stamped in white and light pink with a lip prints.  For those of you unfamiliar with nail stamps, check out this tutorial here:   http://www.nail-art-101.com/nail_stamping_tutorial.html

Neon

Nothing beats neon, and Chanel’s Organdynail polish is the perfect hot pink! This bold color doesn’t need any other gimmicks, the flashy bright color has a punch all on its own.  People will see your nails from a mile away, which on Valentine’s Day is a great time to stand out!  You never know what cutie will notice you!

Ombre

Stars like Lauren Conrad love ombre.  For those of you unfamiliar with ombre, it’s the effect of starting with a dark color and letting it fade lighter.  Both the fashion and beauty worlds have jumped on the bandwagon and ombre nails is the latest addition.  For this pink ombrelook start from the darkest pink color on your thumb and go to the lightest shade on the pinky finger.

Polka Dots

Everyone loves a polka dot so bedazzle your nails with Pinkor  Redpolka dots!  Paint the base with your favorite pink or red polish and then with a small brush or tooth pick create the white polka dots.  Polka dots are great even outside of Valentine’s Day as well.  Choose any color combination to customize your look for any season!
