Gator Glam: 2016’s Trends in Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

As the holidays are approaching and a new year is upon us, it’s only appropriate to now reflect on 2016’s journey through the fashion world. From ‘70s bohemian chic to ‘90s trends such as chokers, 2016 definitely lived up to the phrase ‘everything old is new again.’ Without further ado, let’s take a peek back at some of this year’s hottest fashion trends and styles.

1. Chokers

Over the past few years, chokers have evolved from a staple token from the ‘90s to a completely reinvented item. This year’s trend in chokers opted for chunkier, thicker versions than their 2015 counterparts. In addition, “lace-up” chokers that you could tie around your neck and into a bow became a hit as well.

2. Silk bomber jackets

A more luxurious version of the classic bomber jacket would be this year’s trendy silk bomber jacket. You could find them in darker colors such as black, forest green and burgundy. A variation of this trend included brocade detailing all over the jacket.

3. Neck scarves

Neck scarves rose in popularity this year and definitely contributed to the ‘70s bohemian trend in 2016. Even in 2017, they will still be ideal for all types of weather and are versatile for multiple occasions. For more information on neck scarves, be sure to check out the in-depth article I wrote detailing how and where to wear them.

4. Monochromatic ensembles

With a monochromatic ensemble trend, sticking to a single color palette doesn’t have to be boring. In fact, some of the best outfits (at least that I’ve seen) this past year consisted of similar colors coordinated in perfect harmony. This trend is a classic when it comes to versatility.

5. Athletic leisure (also known as athleisure)

The athleisure trend in 2016 was as comfortable as it was chic. It almost seemed that every time you opened Instagram or Twitter this past year there appeared to be yet another celebrity decked out in traditional, brand-name “athletic” apparel given a more glam, yet casual twist.

6. Flowy peasant tops

If you ever wanted to channel a bohemian goddess, then this was your year. Flowy peasant tops added to the ‘70s trend and were a staple for the summer season. The trend even continued into fall and is still going strong (though I might be a little biased because I absolutely still adore these style of tops).

7. Suede

Suede appeared in a variety of fashion items this year, ranging from skirts to necklaces, and even casual tops. I personally liked suede whenever it appeared in cute A-line skirts from retailers such as Forever 21 and H&M; I find that the skirt is perfect when paired with any fall weather clothing.

8. Lace-up shirts

The lace-up detailing featured in many shirts and dresses this past year made an item like a basic top into something undeniably sexy. You could pair this item with jeans, high-waisted shorts, or even a skirt to transform your outfit into something made for a night out on the town. One of the best parts of this trend is that you can follow a DIY video and create a unique lace-up top using a shirt you already own.

9. Bodycon knit dresses

Another sexy trend this year included bodycon knit dress. Retailers such as Charlotte Russe and Forever 21 gave us a mass variety of this style to choose from, and included dresses suitable for dancing at the club or even a formal dinner.

10. Exposed shoulders

You could give your ex the cold shoulder with this trend while still looking hot. This style could also be found in some of the trends mentioned earlier, such as the flowy peasant tops and the bodycon knit dresses. In addition, practically anyone could have worn an exposed shoulder top and rocked the look.

11. Bandeau tops

Last year, the trend was crop tops. This year, that trend transformed into bandeau tops. Bandeau tops paired with high-waisted shorts or a long, flowy skirt created once again a bohemian vibe this past summer. I predict they will also be a hit for next summer as well.

Overall, these are just some of the trends that dominated the fashion world in 2016. I personally chose to incorporate some of the trends into my wardrobe while leaving others out, as I found that some suit my personal style better than others. We can only wait to see what kinds of trends 2017 will bring!
