Another semester brings another chance to explore all the great destinations Gainesville has hiding downtown! Maybe you’ve never ventured among the busy streets because of the lack of parking, or you thought it was just a bunch of clubs and swanky restaurants only worth going to on your parents’ bill.

The truth is, if you’ve never been downtown, you’re missing out on some of the best Gainesville has to offer with delicious dives, fresh farmer’s markets and laidback bars perfect for winding down after a tough week of classes.

Her Campus is here to help! If you’re looking for an introduction into downtown, this is where you’ll find our top picks for places we think are worth checking out – even if it means a trip on the Later Gator.

First on the list this semester is Flaco’s Cuban Bakery, a perfect spot to reunite with friends over coffee and hot pressed sandwiches before heading out for a night on the town. Located across the street from :08, Flaco’s menu includes a bevy of Cuban favorites like Ropa Vieja, sweet plantains and a mouth-watering selection of hot pressed sandwiches stuffed with everything from pulled pork to tasty tempeh.

Perhaps the most popular item at this café is the Cuban Gator; a tangle of shredded beef and pork piled with Swiss cheese, mustard, mayo and pickles and served on pressed and buttered Cuban bread. Sounds tasty, right? If that’s not enough to satisfy your appetite, order one of their Platos of Ropa Vieja, Shredded Pork, Chicken or Sunshine with a combination of your favorite three sides. The generous portions will have you filled up and ready to take on the hours of dancing ahead of you.

Don’t be afraid to try Flaco’s vegetarian options either. The Plantain and Cheese Sandwich is a daring and delicious combo for anyone with a sweet tooth. And the Sunshine’s mixture of tempeh, veggies and cheese is a flavor-packed triple threat.

For a quick bite between venues, reach for a cheesy arepa or one of the menu’s freshly baked pastries filled with cream cheese, guava or seasoned tempeh. The perfectly flaky crust will have you asking for another.

While the simple storefront offers a cozy spot to chow down on your meal, Flaco’s creations are also great to take on the go. When the weather isn’t close to Sahara status, take your order outdoors to one of the benches lining the streets or walk around and see what else there is to discover.
