Tips for a Healthier Thanksgiving

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

Thanksgiving has finally arrived! For us that means spending time with our families, taking a break from school, and most importantly getting our first delicious home cooked meal in awhile. Thanksgiving also means wearing loose fitting clothing in order to eat as much as we want without having to unbutton our jeans to do so. We usually end up going to sleep feeling overstuffed and promising ourselves to work out the next day (but who are we kidding, that does not happen).  In order to prevent that feeling, here are five tips for a healthier Thanksgiving!

1. Eat breakfast the morning of Thanksgiving.

This will help you to not starve all day waiting for dinner, ultimately helping you to not stuff your face right as dinner is served.

2. Slow down and enjoy the meal.

While all we want to do is shovel food into our mouths and not make conversation about our personal lives, this is a time to really enjoy family time and have nice conversations.

3. Drink water before, during, and after the meal.

Besides water being great for your health, it can also help to fill you up so that you don’t overeat.

4. Don’t immediately go for seconds.

While seconds are tempting, wait at least fifteen minutes after your first plate to go back for more because chances are you haven’t let your stomach realize that it’s full yet. Plus, Thanksgiving leftovers just might be better than the meal the day of!

5. Take a family walk after dinner.

This is great to work off some of the meal and aid digestion, while also being able to spend quality time with your loved ones.

Have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving!
