Taking the Plunge with Lipstick

If you are anything like me, you have a finite budget, so buying a new outfit every time that you are bored with your look is usually out of the question. One simple way to spice up your look is by adding a pop of color to your lips! While colored lip balms and lip glosses can be fun to try, I have found that lipstick provides the most color and effect. While diving into the crazy world of lipstick can be overwhelming, it can add dramatic flare to a casual look or a touch of class to your make-up routine.

Lipstick Applicator: Your new best friend

One of the scariest parts of wearing a bold lipstick, for me at least, was trying to make sure that the lipstick covered my lips entirely without leaving the lip line. The lipstick itself isn’t the best tool to accurately cover your lips. It is easy enough when the lipstick is new, but when when the shape startes getting distorted with use, I love using my lipstick applicator. It allows me to paint my lips with a tiny brush, ensuring I get lipstick where I want it, and avoid areas where I do not. It has been a lifesaver for me, especially when I wear my favorite shade of red. It takes a little longer to apply, but I guarantee that the end result is worth it. You can find the lip brushes at cosmetic and beauty stores, some for under $10. Don’t forget to blot by putting a piece of tissue between your lips to remove excess make-up!

Fun Colors To Try

1. Red

Ahh, red lipstick. Classic, elegant, and the favorite lip color of the super trendy Taylor Swift. In fact, three of the songs on her insanely popular new album mention her red lips. Coincidence? I think not. This bold look certainly attracts attention; even guys have complemented my lipstick when I wear my signature red (and they usually never notice these sort of things)! The key to wearing a red lipstick is finding the shade that is right for you. Picking the first red you see will probably not be the best idea; it is better to test them on yourself at a cosmetics counter or at the store with the sample lipsticks provided. Based on your skin tone, different reds will look much better on you than others. For me, I need a more “blue” or dark red as opposed to an “orange” or light red. The darker shade creates more contrast between my fair skin and my lips. Once you find the shade that’s right for you, you will never want to stop using it! For a night out, try matching your lip color with a matching red nail polish.

2. Nude

Hear me out, but I think that nude lipstick can be just as useful for a night on the town as it can be for going to class. Nude lipstick can be dressed up with a bold, dark eye for a nighttime look or can be used as the finishing touch for your daily make-up routine. A nude lipstick can tie together a look and create a more “finished” feel.

3. Pink

Pink lipstick is fun, girlie, and comes in a number of shades. There are darker shades of pink like magenta that can add a touch of bold elegance to an outfit and lighter pinks can help play up more free-spirited looks. Pinks can be easily incorporated into everyday outfits, especially if it is a more subdued shade that complements your skin tone. Pink lips can be very bold or just add a little brightness to your face!

4. Maroon/Plumb

I have not been so bold as to try this trend, but I have a number of friends who have raved about more purple/brown shades for their lips. It helps add a touch of color to your lips without going as bright as a red. With that said, there are a number of these types of shades that are incredibly bold as well, so feel free to play around with colors until you figure out which shades you feel the most comfortable wearing. Whether it’s red, nude, pink, or plumb, adding color and fun to your look is just a few lipsticks away!
