35 Best Memories (and Worst Trends) of Our Youth

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

Looking back, we’re not sure what society was thinking with some of these cringe-worthy trends from our childhood. For example…

1.     These things

    My only question: why?

    2.     Crimped hair

      Looking nice, Britney.

      3.      Juicy Couture tracksuits

I’m sorry, but am I the only one who can’t help but laugh over the fact that there were individuals out in the world with the word “juicy” across their derrieres?

        4.     The Juke Phone

I would like to know who thought it would be a good idea to have a phone the size of a toothpick.

          5.     Gauchos

I was a proud owner of 3 pairs of these in elementary school and they were probably the most comfortable things I have ever worn.

            6.     Snap Bracelets

Not snapping one of these annoyingly in class while Mrs. Carey is reading a book out loud? Good luck trying to be a cool kid.

              7.      Lip Gloss. Lots of it.

                Was your lip gloss poppin’?

                8.      Layering Your Tank Tops

Nothing screamed “fashion statement” more than wearing an unnecessary extra tank top under the one you were already wearing.

                  9.     Laced Up Jeans

Were we paying a tribute to the times back when we didn’t know what zippers were?

                    10.      Studded Belts

Oh, you’re wearing a studded belt? Right, that means I shouldn’t mess with you.

But the 90’s and early 2000’s were also a great time to be a kid. Here are some of our favorite memories:

                      1.      “A baby’s gotta do what a baby’s gotta do.”

                      2.      My tamagotchi just died. *sad beeping noises*

                      3.       Wanting to be friends with Brock and Misty from Pokemon

                      4.         “Stupid dog! You made me look bad!”

Anyone else think this show was nightmare fuel?

                      5.         “Now this is a story all about how my life got flip-turned upside down.”

                      6.         “Sugar, spice, and everything nice.”

                      7.         Talk to the hand.

                      The best comeback ever.

                      8.         What’s in a wonderball?

                      9.         Having a huge VHS collection in the living room

                      10.       Wearing (and losing) scrunchies

                      Mostly losing.

                      11.       I know you are, but what am I?

We obviously won a lot of arguments.

                      12.       The Macarena

                      13.        Cruising the neighborhood on our Razor scooters

                      14.       Eeny-meeny-miny-mo.

                      How decisions were made.

                      15.       Any mistake ever: “Oops, I did it again.”

                      16.       “Oh snap!”

                      17.       “Goodbye Lizzie McGuire, hello fabulous!”

                      18.       Heelys

                      19.       “Amanda, please!”

                      20.       Please be kind, and rewind.

                      21.       Collecting Beanie Babies

                      22.       Oreo O’s Cereal: For a richer, creamier, chocolatey taste!

                      23.       Getting Goosebumps

                      24.       Backstreet Boys

                      25.       Playing Red Light, Green Light
