5 Reasons Why I Love MTV’s Show “Catfish”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Riverside chapter.

If you haven’t heard the news, Nev Schulman is coming to campus today (March 13th)! If you don’t know who Nev or what Catfish is then go Google it because I’m too excited to write an explanation.

1) Trash T.V. is Awesome!

I first got addicted to the show during winter break, when nothing was on TV. And ever since watching my first episode of Catfish I longed for more. Why is it that I am utterly fascinated by people who so dearly want to know if whoever they’re chatting with online is real?!?

2) It’s So Predictable

The title of the show is Catfish, so although it’s obvious that the person who will be revealed at the end is an impostor, I continue to watch the show. The typical scenario usually goes something like this: Boy (girl) meets girl (boy) online they’ve chatted for several months/years but have never met up. Boy (girl) goes to ask Nev for help. Nev does some research, things seem fishy, they go meet up and BAM, the boy (girl) has been chatting with someone who has been deceiving them about their gender or appearance. And after all the drama, you’ve got your happy ending where you find out whether or not both parties are still in contact, who they’re dating, and all that jazz.

3) I Learned How to Google Image Search Someone

Is Google awesome, or what! All you do is drag your selected picture onto the Google image search engine and it will show you all the places where that picture has appeared. Yes, often times the picture that you’re trying to look up is so generic that in your results you will get a bunch of unrelated pictures. But for the most part, it works when someone is impersonating a celebrity or a generic website picture.

4) I Caught Myself a Catfish!

Thanks to Nev and his super stalker internet skills, I’ve started Google image searching people…don’t ask. Recently I was on a site and some dude was pretending to be The Big Bang Theory actor, Kunal Nayyar. So being the internet vigilante that I am, I confronted him.

5) Nev Schulman is Super Cute

He’s not your conventional “tall, dark, and handsome” bloke (whatever that means) but for some reason, whether it be the fact that he is so nice and vulnerable enough to believe that the people on the other side of the computer really are who they say they are, I find myself giggling at the fact that I will be seeing him today. I mean what should I even wear??!
