The Night Owl, a cool and cozy café in Downtown Fullerton, is known for its incredibly cute owl theme and live music, which happens almost weekly. I had the pleasure of listening to Lou Lagoon while sipping on one of The Night Owl’s popular drinks: a large Blueberry Muffin Latte. Despite the recent drop in temperatures, I had the drink iced and it was absolutely divine.
The café includes indoor seating as well as a back patio which is converted into a miniature stage to accommodate performers such as Jacob Wright and Lou Lagoon, who performed Nov. 14. Luckily, I had the opportunity to speak to Luis Lagunas (aka Lou Lagoon) after his performance. He told me his music is inspired by heartbreak, influenced by musician Sixto Rodriguez (also simply known as Rodriguez), and kept raw and real during his live performances. Lagunas’ musical experience ranges from playing the electric guitar to being a vocalist and even partaking in a bit of choral and operatic singing. Lagunas frequently plays in the Fullerton area and even mentioned that his latest performance at The Night Owl was his first one there in two years, taking into account that his first live performance was at this very café.
Johnny, one of the baristas at The Night Owl with prior experience as a chef, mentioned how successful live-performances have been while highlighting the café’s weekly Open Mic nights on Tuesdays. Open Mic includes things from poetry, acapella and acoustic music, and even rapping. Set on the corner of N. Harbor Blvd. and W. Amerige Ave., The Night Owl is the perfect place for some late-night studying (considering that they close at 2 AM from Tuesday through Saturday) as well as a good place to enjoy some live performances. The coffee isn’t half bad either!
