Event to Look for: F Cancer Vancouver 2017

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UBC chapter.

On October 20th, F Cancer Events will be hosting “F Cancer Vancouver 2017” at the Republic to fundraise money for research and other F Cancer programs. To attend, guests purchase $20.00 tickets in the form of coloured T-shirts each representing a different type of cancer. To get into the event, you simply need to wear your purchased tee.

F Cancer is the hybrid result of two different organizations, Fuck Cancer and F*ck Cancer, being merged in 2015 by their founders Yael Cohen Braun and Julie Greenbaum. Braun founded Fuck Cancer in 2009 after his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2010, Greenbaum created F*ck Cancer in memory of her mother who died from ovarian cancer. Both founders aim to provide programs that will prevent and detect cancer, educate the public, and empower others. Since 2009, they have raised over 2 million towards cancer research and digital tools.

What makes F Cancer stand out from other charity organizations is that targets what it calls “Generation Communication” or “Gen-C.” In other words, a generation that utilizes technological communication above all else for their information. In addition, they aim to raise funding for preventive measures over funding for treatment. As their site says, “50% of all cancers are preventable however the National Cancer Institute in 2012 spent more than $3 billion dollars for basic research and treatment with only $232 million (7.7%) going towards prevention and control.”

F Cancer party events are thrown all over the world, creating a unique community that “[fights] back against cancer with levity and revelry.”

Show support for an important cause while also having a blast this October 20th in Vancouver tickets can be purchased through their Facebook page.
