A Collegiette’s Guide to Falsies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Toronto chapter.

I am no expert on false eyelashes, but I’m willing to be to be the guinea pig you watch to help you decide if falsies are for you! Before we get to the video, let’s talk lashes!

Apparently, falsies were invented in the beginning of the 20th century for an actress (which doesn’t surprise me at all) and they have become popular in Hollywood ever since! False lashes are super popular mainly because they make your eyes appear larger than they usually do. They basically open up your facial features, so what’s not to love? There are so many kinds of lashes you can experiment with – you can go for a more natural look like the ones on the left, a dramatic look like the ones in the center, or if you want to go all out, try these bejewelled ones on the right!

I’ve heard a lot of good things about the Ardell brand of lashes that you can get at Walmart, so those are the lashes I’ve chosen to use for my first time for falsies video! I’ve also heard that Sephora’s fake eyelash line is pretty awesome, but for a heftier price.

Things to Think About:

After doing a little research, using falsies everyday is a pretty big no-no. When you glue falsies onto your eyelid (which is a super sensitive area) you’ve got to eventually pull them off. When you do get the nerve to finally do it, you might agitate the skin a bit, or the glue might take a few of your real lashes – that’s why you might feel like your natural lashes die a little every time you put on falsies.

Another thing to remember is that you shouldn’t be re-using falsies, like ever. They can accumulate dirt and dust that might agitate our eyes, or the skin around your eyes. Plus, they could become a real bacteria magnet, and nobody wants pink eye!

For the frequent falsies user, putting fake lashes on might be a breeze – but for a first timer like me, and probably the majority of women, these bad boys are no joke! They take some real getting used to. If you’re not willing to spend 10 minutes in the mirror trying to get them on, it’s better to use them once in a while – on a hot date or a girls night out, instead of everyday use.

As promised, here’s the video where I put on falsies for the first time by myself! (The first time, I had to get my sister AND boyfriend to help me; sadly, it still didn’t work out)

Hope this helps!

Vanessa

I'm a Shakespeare loving, eyebrow obsessing beauty junkie, who adores all things having to do with Harry Potter, delicious food, and good music. After 4 years I've finally graduated from the oh so wonderful, University of Toronto and am currently working toward a Masters of Information degree.  I'd like to think of myself as a modern day romantic with an unquenchable wanderlust. My current dream is to one day go on an international library hopping adventure! For an aspiring special collections librarian, that is definitely at the top of my list post-graduation. I am a frequent visitor of the ROM and love going see the Nutcracker during the holidays. As a Decemeber baby myself, I absolutely love the winter time, the snow, the holiday cheer, and the half coffee half hot chocolates I get from Timmys. As for music, my likes are pretty much across the board! From John Mayer to Sam Smith, Debussy to Duke Ellington, Xtina to today's pop hits, you'll find me somewhere in the middle. On a regular day, you'll probably find me at home with my dog Kacy on a Mad Men binge, or catching up with Once Upon a Time, The Good Wife, How To Get Away With Murder and Suits- ps. I love netflix!
