Things We Can All Learn from the Characters in New Girl

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

Jess

Jess radiates positivity and is always there to take care of her friends when they’re in need. Being a middle school vice-principal/principal, she has to learn to cope with her stress with the most glass-half-full perspective. Jess teaches us to be kind, thoughtful and hopeful for the future. Most importantly, Jess teaches us to take big risks. After all, she literally decided to move in with 3 strange men she had never met before – that could’ve gone in a terrible direction. Also, Jess has clearly demonstrated that you can always start randomly singing in awkward situations and it will, in fact, solve your problems.

Cece

Cece’s character development progress over the course of each season as she grows more open-minded and accepting of herself and her situation around her. Cece spends the first seasons denying her feelings for Schmidt as he is completely not the kind of person she expected to fall in love with. As she acknowledges her reality and finally admits that she wants to be with him, Cece shows us what it means to step out of your comfort zone and be open to new turns in life.

Nick

Nick is presented as kind of a big weirdo in the show – not paying any of his bills, doesn’t believe in owning a cell phone, dabbling in conspiracy theories, among other strange habits. Being a bartender/new owner of a bar, you would have never guessed that nick is actually a licensed lawyer who just chose to leave the path of bureaucracy behind in exchange for a simple life. Nick really doesn’t seem to care how much money he does or doesn’t have, and as long as his roommates are paying for the Wi-Fi, his lack of resources never causes him much trouble. Nick is the epitome of the phrase “money doesn’t buy happiness”, as he is quite resourceful with the little he has and is very happy being himself in his own world surrounded by his friends.

Schmidt

Schmidt is a good example of why a little organization and an ounce of crazy doesn’t hurt anyone. Okay, maybe he’s a little crazier than just an ounce, but his love for cleaning and precise attention to detail makes him extremely lovable and the ideal roommate. This is beside his cultured obsession with kimonos and Japanese kitchenware.  Let’s also not forget how Schmidt’s transformation from his awkward college days to his success in the professional marketing field and his personal fitness gives us hope for our own future glow-ups and reminds us to indulge in a little more self-love.

Winston

Winston has gone from being a basketball player in Latvia to being a part-time nanny, indulging in a radio career, to finally finding his calling as a police officer.  Winston took a long time to find out what he really wants to do in life. Once he knew, he jumped through quite a few hoops before finally landing his certification and becoming a real cop. Winston is a good example of someone using up all the time they need to find the right career and path in life and pursuing that path with all he has. He would definitely be the kind of uni student to switch up their major at least 3 times – but he teaches us that this is perfectly okay.
