How the 5 Major Social Networks Are Really Used

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Whether on cell phones, computers, tablets, etc., social networks are available wherever we go, and almost everyone has an account on at least one of them. Each social network has something it’s intended to be used for, but we all know what each social network is really used for, and who uses it.

FacebookFacebook is the oldest social network, and its users are slowly following suit. The only reason that teenagers and young adults use Facebook now is for groups and photo albums, and those that post the usual irrelevant statuses are totally deserving of the eye-roll. People just post for the sake of posting, and it gets to the point that our Newsfeed is filled with total randomness.

We also have so many friends on Facebook that maybe only a quarter of them are people we would actually talk to, and we can’t even be interested in the other 75% of our Newsfeed.

But our parents, however, love Facebook. Facebook for parents is the social network version of the “I love my honors student” bumper sticker. Parents will post the most embarrassing, tacky, and hilarious things on Facebook. Every time you get a notification from a family member, you know it’s going to be cringe-worthy. You want to un-friend them so bad, so you can just pretend you’re not related…

Overall, Facebook has been taken over by the older generations, and all of the younger people have migrated to bigger and better things. That migration started as soon each one of us saw our grandmas’ friend request.TwitterWhen teens couldn’t use Facebook for stupid statuses anymore, they all migrated to Twitter. Twitter is the place for as much of the random thoughts running through your head that you can fit into 140 characters.

Sometimes you can get news updates on twitter faster than on CNN, but most of the time everyone is tweeting just about nothing of importance – all. the. time.

TumblrTumblr is a place for those important thoughts deep in the back of your head. All the creative juices that flow can be stirred up and splattered onto a web page

Some people’s accounts are so deep and poetic, so unbelievably powerful, it might literally blow you away from your computer screen.

Other accounts are rib-crackingly, pee-your-pants, hilarious. Some people just have a certain genius that can make you laugh hysterically, and Tumblr is a great place to find people with that skill. Reading Tumblr can lead to a very funny afternoon.

SnapchatEveryone loves taking selfies, pretty ones or ugly ones; seeing yourself on camera is so much fun. Snapchat is mainly used for two things: ugly selfies for your friends.

And impressing all your Snapchat friends with how cool you are with your MyStory. Come on, you have to document how amazing you look in that selfie.

InstagramInstagram works for every type of person, because every different photo is accepted and filtered to make even an iPhone camera look professional. There are those that can always snap that perfect artsy shot…with much effort and attention to detail of course.

Instagram is also partial to those who loves selfies, and those who have mastered the camera angle, and perfect filter for your skin tone. Fix your makeup and hair and take 4700 photos just to post that perfect one

Instragram is fun because it makes everyone feel loved, and the more and more likes you get you just keep getting greedier. Keep those likes and comments coming, people! And then when you finally get 100 likes, you feel like a total superstar. Each social network has its specific use, and each person uses each one differently. Keep clicking away people, because everyone loves to be noticed online. Post away, Collegiettes!
