My Boyfriend Chose My Outfits For A Week & This Is What Happened

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

This is my boyfriend, Jake. Jake is awesome and fun and a really nice guy. He also happens to be a shoe addict. AKA he spends time looking at shoe apps, Instagram accounts and shopping for shoes. One day, Jake and I had a discussion about my shoe choices and how he cares WAY more about shoes and overall fashion than I do. Thus, the idea of him picking out my clothes for class for a week was born.

I would describe my personal style as a combination of a frumpy mother of three and an insecure high school sophomore. I don’t really care much about fashion; I always choose comfort over style (I am a proud proponent of Crocs), and my closet is fairly limited. In my defense, I wore a uniform for 12 years of my life, so I don’t really know or care about what to wear every day. In addition, I always opt to save time in the mornings, apply the least amount of makeup possible and very rarely style my hair. I immediately knew this week was about to get weird.

We began on Sunday night in my room, checking the weather and picking out clothes for the school week. By the end, my room was a disaster, and my pride a bit scarred after Jake telling me that my “shoe game is terrible.” However, I was ready for the week and armed with a set of five outfits that were sure to impress.

Monday

Jake: I picked out the blue flowy sweater with leggings because I like the way it fits you and makes you look adorable.

Me: This outfit is one of my favorites in general. This sweater is super comfy, and the tennis shoes are great for my 20-minute walk to class. No complaints here.

Tuesday

Jake:  I chose this outfit because I thought it was casual but still had enough style to look nice for class. Plus, I had never seen you wear this shirt, so I wanted you to wear it.

Me: I was apprehensive about this outfit from the beginning, as I very rarely wear two articles of tight clothing together. I also steer clear of tight shirts in general, which is probably why Jake has never seen me wear this shirt. While I liked that this outfit showed off my figure more than my normal style does, I felt uncomfortable all day. Sitting through class in skinny jeans and a tight shirt leaves little room for movement.

Wednesday

Jake: It was projected to be cold and rainy this day, so I wanted you to wear this to be comfortable and warm.

Me: After Tuesday’s outfit, I was looking forward to this day. I simply rolled out of bed, put this outfit on and left. This is very similar to what I would normally wear to class. However, for some reason all day I felt like I could have dressed so much cuter, but I guess that wasn’t my choice.

Thursday

Jake: First of all, this outfit fit you well and looked cute. But secondly, it also gave off a good fall vibe with the dark jeans and flannel. It was a bit difficult to find shoes for this one though, I would have liked to see some booties or better fall shoes.

Me: While I never would have picked this out on my own, I loved this outfit. It was fairly comfy but still looked really good. I agree with what Jake said—it was a nice way to dress for fall without going all out. Also, I need to get in on the whole booties trend. I actually got a ton of compliments on it, though, and I will definitely be wearing this again.

Friday

Jake: I picked that shirt because I think it fits you well and was casual but still showed that you tried to look good for class. Also, straight hair and glasses are one of my favorite looks of yours.

Me: I was torn on this outfit. While the glasses and straight hair looked great, I didn’t like the way this shirt fit me. Actually, in all honesty, I don’t think I’ve ever even worn this shirt. I liked the jacket with the jeans, though, and I probably will wear this again with a different shirt.

Overall, this was an interesting experience. Jake didn’t exactly pick out the clothes I thought he would; instead, he picked out a few outfits that I have worn before and made a few of his own out of my closet staples. I felt like he took into account my personal style while also taking risks and pushing me out of my comfort zone. For example, the striped shirt from Tuesday and red shirt from Friday were things that I had in my closet but had never really worn that often. I think sometimes it’s too easy to just wear the same outfit over and over again, but this experience opened my eyes and made me realize that there are a lot more outfit possibilities in my closet than I knew I had. I also learned that my boyfriend has much better style than me and an incredibly large shoe collection that I will never be able to live up to.
